Is ear shape important to channeling sound?

When it comes to headphones I have to wonder how ear shape comes into play. I know the ears are shaped like little satellite dishes to direct sound into the ear, but do over ear headphones take advantage of this phenomenon in a way that IEMs can't? Thanks.

Sure they do, Headphone with angled transducer mounting in the ear cup is trying to do just that. Ear speakers like AKG K1000 and Sony PFR-V1 take the concept even further.
