Actually the audio codec/chip inside your laptop is the brain behind the audio quality output, but also some other thing like noise from your laptop's components, line out, etc...

 

maybe your 2007 VAIO has better codec than your newer portable comps...

first you need to know what audio codec resides in your laptop (find this information in Device Manager) for example Realtek ALCxxx or Creative xxx... and then just googled it to know its specs..

It's the position and quality of the speakers. The 2007 VAIO had extremely clear and detailed audio while this 2011 computer I am using is quite muffled and a tad nasaly.
