Unique Set up question regarding DAC and Sound Card

sry for Lengthy but please read

Ive been searching to bring out the full potential of my speakers but i have not come across anyone with a good thread or comment that i can follow because my set up is different

my setup i believe is unique because i am using the computer as an audio source but am also using car audio amplifiers using a voltage converter (i know this is head fi but you guys will know whats best since i need help with DAC and Sound Card)

set up

custom comp:

amdx6 radeon hd6850 (no sound card)

Amplifiers:

voltage converter treo ssx75.4.. JL300/2.. Memphis MCA 150..

(powering 3" dome dayton mids1.24" Image Dynamics CXT dome tweet.. 7" daytons woofers.. 10" rockford pre-2000)   respectively to the amps

Wiring:

comp case headphone out from onboard with headphone to L/R RCA chord which goes to JL in then, JLout to Memphis in, then MEmphis out to TREO in

My wiring is legit minus losing 3d from splitting the memphis rca out to an xtra chan of rca since the memphis to treo goes from 2 chan to 4 chan

Problem: slight constant white noise. 100% sure caused by mobo because taking headphone chord out of computer and putting into Ipod ,, Ipod has no white noise
^^ so i am guessing the onboard sound on my M4a87TD is picking up electrical interference
Also the Ipod sounds much better than my pc. So i am guessing the on board sound is not very good.

I think a sound card would be a must.

I am thinking HT OMEGA CLARO HALO (uncertain because i dont need a headphone amp. not runnin headphones) I believe i want the HT OMEGA Or ASUS XONAR because they have driect RCA out which is a major plus to me

What i dont know is if i will need a DAC After a sound card why would i need a DAC

I only want to spend 200$
i am pretty sure going from 2010 onboard to 200$ 2008-2011 sound card would be a decent medium improvement. yall think it would be night and day?

and i might spend more for a DAC additionaly after the card if it would truly make it even better.

sry for the long OP

200$ HT CLARO HALO  might be unneccesary since it has headphone amp. would i need a headphone amp if im not using headphones?

in short  im running 2.1 stereo via headphone jack to  RCA to amp to speaker

I think most are kind of lost for words, and some even shocked tongue_smile.gif

is there a reason why you're using a car audio set-up with your PC? have you considered getting proper speakers?

I'd guess even a pair of Audioengine A2 (no amp required) would sound a lot better than your current speakers, or a pair of Insignia NS-B2111 + an used receiver/amp would be money better spent on than any $200 sound-card will do to your set-up.

have not heard your set-up, so I may be wrong. but I doubt it, imo

haha well thank u for the reply.

im not new to audio, i am new to PC though.

i sold my old car and didnt put the audio in the new car so put the car audio in the house

my set up is very respectable.

my onboard is realtek VIA HD audio deck which has 24bit depth and up to 192 sample rate. it sounds pretty good.

i jsut wanna know if a sound card with RCA out to go direct to my rca on the amp. or if a DAC would be better??

going from my car cd player to pc i got rid of alot of white noise. so i think if i upgrade stock mobo sound then a new card would be even more clear. any kind of buzzing that most people dont hear or mind kills me

i just checked out the A2's. they would maybe have a tiny bit more sq but mayb/ i think prolly not.

spl wise A2's would get raped
wish u could come check it out so u could hear this

I used to do a bit of car audio myself and sounds like this setup beats when setup properly. I think the main thing here is trying to find a sound card that can act as the head unit you had. If you still have the head unit you should just run an AUX from your sound card to the head unit.

I got an idea, but I'm not sure if this would work. For now, its easier to just think of a DAC/Soundcard as the same thing and focus on the specs of whatever product your looking at. I'd say either a HT Omega Claro or the ESI Audio Juli@. Both sound cards have 4 1/8" stereo outputs so I would just get 3 of these cables and run one to each amp. I'm not sure if this will work with the Omega Claro, but the ESI says it has 4 inputs and outputs that can be used simultaneously. It took me a second to realize this, but the ESI also gives you the choice of 4 unbalanced RCA jacks or 4 balanced TRS jacks so you could also get this cable. Let me know if this sounds like it would work lol

correct. my comp is my cd player.

it sounds worse with my car cd player between the comp and amps. its like doubling up on volume knobs if u will. its no good. they dont work well together. sounds much better with strait computer to amps.

really the only thing i need to know is if a dac would be better or a soundcard or neither. it realy sounds good as it is, just not much sound stage (listening distance is 8ft and speaker seperation is 4ft with sub in corner.

i was hopen sum1 on here would know if sound card/ dac will make my set up sound better without me haven to spend 200 and end up not improving alot.

any one in SC should stop by and give a listen

PC > USB DAC > 5 Channel amp > two "fronts" / two "rears" / sub.

All you'd need is the power converter for the amplifier. I'd say get the DAC simply because it'll bypass the onboard audio, and any interference sound your HDD/PSU may be generating will be totally erased.

i was actualy just thinkn that for a slight surround sound, but i dont think rear speakers are worth it.

right now i bassicaly got 6.1 all to front since its a 3 way set up and each component of the 3 way is seperately amped. 75x2 75x2 75x2 and then 150x1 for sub

i just picked up a soud blaster 7.1 xifi  today from staples for 60 bucks !!!! and all the music sounds a little bit better.
since replacing my mobo sound with this sound card i get no computer related electrical interference. also the volume level with respect to the onboard is more powerful so i dont have to turn it up as far. i havent cranked it to rediculous levels yet since my moms been home, but 2marrow shes doin errans so ima put it full tilt then.

60$ sound card was worth the quality improvement.
creative has so much ******** installation.

i think ill post pics of the rig once i get into my apartment august 24th

i dont think a DAC would improve anythn after the sound card. but i could be wrong on that, what yall think

DACs are used to replace any sound card you have. Weather that be on board or PCIE.
