Can I use the Pre-Out on my integrated to drive my phones?

I have an ME-240 Integrated amp which I'm using to drive a pair of AKG 141's with the Aux-out at the moment.

I'd like to know if it's safe to use the Pre-out instead.

The reasons are: the Aux-out volume is too high and not adjustable on the unit.

I am not sure what the Aux out does.  If it is basically a monitor-out function, it bypasses the preamp.  This amounts to a direct connection between connection between your source and your headphones.  Using the preamp out will probably be even louder, but controllable, since it is in the signal path that goes through your volume control. It's safe to use, but I suggest you get a headphone amp appropriate to your headphones.  These are very sensitive headphones and don't need much power.

Good luck.

That's alright, perhaps someone else knows what the Aux does. I had several internet experts tell me it definitely wouldn't work and would most assuredly be too quiet.

I may prefer to use a buffer, but there's still some info I'm waiting on and it's nice to have a reasonable workaround in the meantime. It definitely works better with the AKG's than with smaller, cheaper phones, it's a pretty sweet match as long as I'm careful.

I haven't tried the pre-out yet, as it means powering down and trying something expendable first.

I've moved on from that particular amp and am no longer interested in headphones, but I did get a sensible answer (nothing could have prepared me for the shock) from Redgum. So this is for anyone who's searching threads and wants something approaching a reasonable answer to a reasonable question from someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

Note, it isn't about the pre-out, but the speaker terminals, but it's a start:

"Most people are unaware that an amplifier fitted with a headphone jack has a series of tiny pinhead contacts directly in the speaker line in order to create an automatic speaker disconnection when the headphones are plugged into the socket. This means then that for the whole life of the amp, it has the speaker line current running through these contacts plus the yards of wire (or worse still, yards of printed circuit) needed to connect them. As well, this lowers the Damping Factor at the output terminals of the amplifier.

For an amplifier designed to have the shortest signal paths wherever possible, and as few contact points as possible.......this is why we choose NOT to include one in REDGUM amplifiers!

The cheapest way to get external headphone connection is to buy one of the cheaper speaker switching boxes - these often have a headphone as part of the box.

The best way, (of course), is to buy the REDGUM RGHF dedicated headphone amplifier!!!
(In the interim, if you wish to connect headphones directly to the speaker terminals, you can do so by putting 100ohm resistor in series with each line.)"
