Marines tin ideas.

post #1 of 32

So I recently enlisted in the DEP for the Marine Corps and upon acceptance I received a nice brushed steel looking aluminium tin. Its the same height as a standard mint tin and about 1/2" larger length and width wise as 4 penguin mint tins. As soon as I saw them handing these puppies out I thought. What kind of audio device would this be a suitable case for? So now I beseech you here at Head-Fi and ask the same question I asked myself.

What kind of audio device would this be a suitable case for?

I've built a cMoy for portability purposes in a penguin mint tin. The design was by JDSlabs cMoy BB v2.03

I'm looking to use this case as a desktop amp and DAC if I can find some low profile med grade DIY hardware to fit in a mint tin like case. I was thinking DAC and amp side by side to increase fidelity. Any help?

Got a pic?

A CMoy would be a good idea.

@Uncle Erik:

I've already built a cMoy but if thats the only thing that can fit in the case then so be it. I was hoping to try out other DIY projects.

You might be able to build a cmoy with high quality parts, along side a DAC. You will get low external noise with 1-2 inch cable going directly from DAC to cmoy.

That's pretty sweet!  I'm going to have to see about scrounging up a few.

@John in Cali

Well I have a cMoy. how large are PIMETA's I wouldn't mind another cMoy as long as performance was up there. cMoy BB v2.03 has readily available pcb but idk what you mean by premiums parts.

@Anaxilus

Haha idk who would sell them. I could probably ask around and get some tins from fellow enlistees. But do look around to see if ppl sell them.

Hahahahaha wow. They are pretty sick. I've never seen anyone have a case like that but the size limits the of the projects. Can't wait to find out what to put into the case.

But, only for a year? I thought it was a 4 year job in the corps.

Recruiting is a B-Billet and not a primary MOS.  There are always opportunities for TAD (temporary active duty) jobs depending on the 'Needs of the Marine Corps'.

Those are very special. On many levels.

What are the actual dimensions?

I love that tin, best of luck figuring out what kind of audio goodness you're going to stuff in there. Be sure to post some pics and a full review when your done I'm interested to know what you finally decide on.

Premium parts like 1000uf power suply caps.  1uf, 1% tolerance Polypropylene input caps. 1% tolerance resistors. All from high quality manufacturers Panasonic, vishay, black gate are popular. High voltage supply, if you want it to be portable 2-3 9v batteries.

The pimeta v2 is 3.1" × 2.4" so you could fit that rather then the cmoy.
