Limit yourself! This is what i did, i set a number like 10 hours a week for watching TV, 10 hours a week for using the internet. It's hard!! But i was scared to think how many hours a week i was wasting and it's not cool man! If i don't work out and get studying out of the way then don't let yourself use these things! They are so easy to get sucked into, i even thought about setting a parental control on my PC and making a random password so i won't know it.........

Now with head-fi i opened a million threads on different types of phones for different types of music, reading reviews, best bang for the buck on top of the million other forums i visit it's just not right. Then you have a million bookmarks that you "get to" eventually that have backed up a loooong way on firefox. redface.gif And i don't even use Facebook!!!

With the DVR i would try to get to a certain percantage of empty space on it, like say 50% or whatever so i would be there watching show after show and say "ok once i get there i will stop!" "ok what if i go to 55%?" Ahhhhhh no man, go do something else, stop recording everything on TV and just pick a few shows for the week so where you can go 3 or 4 days without even turning it on and not worry if you are about to run out of space! popcorn.gif

Don't get me started on Netflix, i have like 200 items in my streaming queue (streaming! All that crack at your fingertips!) so i just watch things before they are about to expire and whenever i login i try not to look at all the other recommendations TO ADD to my queue!! Doh!  This stuff is right there and it was ruining my life, escaping is so easy and when you get back to reality you see how bad it has gotten where you have no job and no friends so you just say "ta heck with it" and go back and indulge! Which brings me to overeating...forget it, i think they need to have security guards for this type of thing and you can pay them to keep you away from your computer or your refrigerator or whatever, have a little time card and once that's up they will forcibly remove you! tongue_smile.gif Don't forget you need 30 mins. a day of sunlight, so get a good book and head to the park!

If you remove sleep, we only have about 112 hours a week, if you work full time or work/school part time remove 40, so you have about 72 hours of free time in a week! Don't waste them like i did! You know something is wrong when you spend more hours a week chatting on a video game forum than actually playing video games! What I am going to do TC is learn to play an instrument and do some volunteering.

Life is getting back to simple things. A swim in a pool or the Ocean. I walk around town with the dog or by yourself. Walking is healthy, free and a great way to see life. Most of the time we have a little voice to let us know when we need to change direction. People have so many interests that are away from the personal computer. Getting away on a bike for an afternoon, going to a place to meet friends, most towns have tons of cool sights to see.Going to a book store zoo.

These are what people did before the on line boom.

I like this post a lot. I feel exactly what you are saying. For those people who are saying "just keep using it until you feel bored," that will never happen. It is almost like a drug addiction, and telling someone that in order stop the affinity to drugs, to "keep getting high until you can't anymore." That does not work.

Like you, I have too many things piled in my firefox bookmarks. I tried to do the "Read me later" thing, but that just makes it worse. My Netflix is similar too. I have way to many things on it, and I never watch the stuff. I mean, it is kind of sad to realize that I will never finish watching all of the movies, but then again, I don't want to completely get rid of movies in my life. Has anyone been able to keep a balance between which movies to watch, and time?

I think this internet phenomenon is really afflicting my generation. Now, people would rather be "friends" on Facebook, than go out and see a musuem, or even walk in the park like I do myself. I certainly love to do outdoor activities, but the allure of the internet is very powerful. It has negatively affected my social skills. Living in the big city, there is no surfing, no snorkeling. But there are museums. What really sucks is having no-one to go with me. I do like taking photography, but again, it's boring alone.

I think I should ditch smartphones. Can't take being connected to the internet all the time.

i used to be as bad, and even now i find days, particularly my days off, where i spend a great majority of my time just dicking around on the internet. I know that while im doing it its a waste of time and im not getting anything out of it. But I have gotten significantly better. One of the main things i did was cut down on how many feeds i had going into my google reader. im pretty OCD as well, and as long as they were there, i would read them. there was a time where i would probably spend 2 horus a day just catching up on video game/electronics news. I realized that i was spening more time reading about things than i ever did using any of those things, which is completely backwards. Another thing i did was slowly wean myself off of facebook. I sitll check it quite often, but when i find myself starting to just hit refresh, i log off and do something else. It really does take effort, you have to realize what you're doing and forcible make yourself stop doing it.

And its not that i just dont get news anymore, but now i use twitte instead, i follow a few people, who i trust to post the most "important" bits of news and read them, rather than reading every single article that engadget/joystiq post. and instead of spedning 2 housr a day, i spend maybe 20 minutes a day keeping up wiht my news on twitter.

And honestly, its not even that the other things that i would be doing are particularly productive, anime/computer games/movies, but at least the're things that i actually want to do, rather than just being addited to sitting on the internet.

and  valuable lesson to be learned from xkcd(in particular the mouse over text)

EDIT: well it seems that headfi actually copies the pic, so the mouse over text isnt there, just go to the site to see the mouseover text. http://xkcd.com/862/

Ah yes the high line. I really should go sometime this week.

Soup: that 30 second rule actually works, believe or not. I think a major factor in stopping internet addiction is to simply stop posting in forums. That way, there will be no desire to wait or look for a response.
