East Africa Appeal - Page 3

On a side note, the Restless Beings charity dinner I attended the other day (my other half helped organise it) raised over £2300 (a lot of it for other charitable causes besides the East Africa appeal mind). Not bad from only 60 people (mainly students).

Saturday bump.

So I was thinking about how Africa's such a bad place because of the climate,

uneven development and then a question popped up. Why is Africa such a

barren place (blanket statement here), when South America's all green and jungly?

Africa's a huge continent, so there are a lot of different ecosystems from the Mediterranean at the northern coast to the extremely arid in the Sahara, to wet, equatorial jungles, to the different high systems through Kenya, down to a bunch of different systems in the south. There's not one climate, there's not one ecosystem, and there are a range of different human activities that have affected the ability of different areas to sustain communities (like lots and lots of wars).

Indeed. Truly saddening stuff. My prayers are with them.

Let's not let Libya, the earthquake in the eastern US, etc., distract us rom the critical and enduring problem in East Africa....please.....

...and possibly Hurricane Irene on the way too.  Members, please give up a coffee, a lunch or a snack for a week.  Take that money and make a donation that is focused on this unspeakable of human tragedies.  I've personally made a couple donations in the past month and have participated in a three-day water only fast as a symbolic gesture of empathy to those who are starving.  It didn't really affect me negatively and I plan to repeat the fast at least one day a week until this situation improves somehow.  I spent those days listening to music and reflecting on the tragedy, the lives lost, and the lives which inevitably will be lost.  We can only hope.
