Squeezebox directly into amp.

I didn't get any responses (in 24h) from the stereo forum so am posting here. confused_face_2.gif

Does anyone have any experience with plugging the logitec squeezebox directly into an amp? Basically using it as a pre-amp? I know it's going to lack some functionality and lose some quality but it might be a convenient stop gap until I get a sweet arse tube pre-amp. Any insight into this possibility?

Thanks! smily_headphones1.gif

I am connecting a SB Touch directly to a pair of Adam active speakers.

It sounds excellent.

I have my Touch connected to a Parasound Z-amp driving Totem Mite speakers. It's a good system. Note that the Z-amp has user adjustable gain, which is helpful.

Thanks. Oddly enough I was looking at the parasound stuff too for the amp part. Have some hopping creiwn-vega speakers coming soon.

The digital volume control in the Touch sounds just fine.  Really no need for a preamp...

I trust that you have read, digested, and understood the  Connecting directly to a power amplifier article in the squeezebox wiki.

Key points to understand are

  • correct gain staging
  • what happens when you play something at full scale (0 dB attenuation)

This is summarized in the warning

*If you remove the preamp and fail to ensure line level is properly matched to amplifier input sensitivity, you may harm your speakers, or ears, or you may get poor performance from your system.*
