Have the EF-6...no good with big orchestra classical (clips and smears). The EF is great with the th900, so go figure. My Darkstar is coming in in a couple of weeks. I bought it specifically to drive the HE-6 because the EF-6 is no good with it at louder volumes or more congested passages (shame on you Fang Brian). If the darkstar clips and smears with big orchestral classical I think I may have to be institutionalized. Will keep you posted.

the dark star will arrive on Thursday (or so says FedEx). I'll finally be able to give some initial impressions on how it pairs with the HE-6 and the other bunch of headphones in my stable. Need to be careful not to blow up any drivers!

Finally! I am so looking forward to your impressions. Would you also compare to a speaker amp set up? Anyway, thank you and enjoy!dt880smile.png

I can't wait for your review, I pretty much gave up on finding the right amp for HE6.

Do you know what is the output  in terms of watt at 50ohm ? I am not sure why Ray doesn't post the specs for all his amps.

Thanks in advance.

The Dark Star is wonderful with the HE-6, T1, and HD800.  Better with copper (rather than silver) interconnects; the same applies to headphone replacement cables.  The Darkstar, though extremely expensive, does the job extremely well. As opposed to when using the EF-6, the HE-6 does not clip or smear at all with the Darkstar even in the busiest symphonic orchestral passages.  I'm extremely happy with my purchase.  Lots or rhetoric about this amp at Head-Fi, but I bet not too many people have actually heard it.  Great with the TH-900s as well, although you may hear a very faint hiss in the background (but only when music is not playing, as in the silence between music tracks).  The amp to end all, if you have the Mulah!

Having read your experience with HE6/EF6 and HD800, LCD3 (same ownerships) and after ponderous other deliberations, decided to loosen the Moolah today for DS for HE6 especially... (though I do +love+ my EF6).

I see from some other reviews that HE6's brighter treble (I actually like a higher clearer airier sound cp LCD 3's more muted albeit natural signature) is naturally 'reduced' by DS (in a positive way) and more details musically are also said to emerge, with bit more bass too...is that your experience in jazz/classical?

TH900: how does this compare generally as a closed headphone to the HE6's general signature and performance, either with EF6 as well as DS [for jazz and classical, only]?

Thanks, N.

Yes, that's my experience with the HE6/DS pairing with classical; like to use copper cables since silver makes it sound just a tad too bright.  As for the TH900...much more fun that the HE6...when it comes to comfort it's no contest.  Sounds great with classical and everything to throw at it.  Sounds amazing with the EF6 and DS, but you get a bit of hiss (you cannot hear it when the music is playing) given how sensitive they are and how powerful the amps happen to be.  Not intrusive, though.  Frankly, I like the TH900 better.  Never been a fan of Fang's (Hifiman) products...they look either cheap, clunky, or both; additionally the HE6 made me spend more than 3K on the DS...I'll never forgive Fang for that one...His much vaunted EF6 is no good with the HE6....I'm in the minority in this, but "I am unanimous in that!!!"

Thanks figaro69! Your TH900 comments are indeed encouraging and pocket lightening. Well, I agree HE6 is not cosmetically, ergonomically and aesthetically top notch :) alas! but I have enjoyed it alot myself...though am in the same boat as all ampwise (I bought RS' SR71B at outset a while back to meet my portability needs with HE6 but while nicely tiny, SR71B has to be turned all the way up too). But more than pure power itself by the DS, I sincerely hope the quality of music and detail is going to be bumped up, ceteris paribus on source, leads etc.! Best, N.

Very interesting comments on the DS and EF-6 with the HE-6.  Having not heard the DS I can't comment on the comparisons.  However, there are way more impressions going the other way.  Makes me really want to hear to DS.

Thanks, N.

You will not regret it. I have compared the DS to the EF6 side by side with my HE-6 (Zeus hardwired) and IMO the DS was much better in clarity, fidelity and soundstaging. I actually was expecting more from the EF6 since it suppose to be designed for the HE-6 but IMO the quality of the sound in general from the DS was superior.

I sold my DS only because it was in my leaving room system and it was not being used much at all and I had no space in my bedroom system where I normally listen to headphones. I sold my Threshold monoblocks (T400) and preamp and bought a pair of McIntosh monoblocks (MC601) and C-2300 tube preamp that has headphones output so I also sold the DS.

I am using the HE-6 in my bedroom system with a dedicated Threshold T50 speaker amplifier and my Threshold T2 preamp (since it has dual balanced output so I am using one for the S550e speakers amplifier and the other to the T50 for the HE-6).

My only issue with the DS was that it is too powerful for other cans specially the low impedance ones. With the HD800 was not a major issue but with something like the Denon, Fostex or AT W3000ANV even in low gain there was not much room in the volume knob to play with but if you have a source with variable output you can attenuate the signal there to help with that.
