How large are the differences in sound between portable music sources?

The title went a bit bigger than I intended but what I mean: assuming same budget earphones unamped, what is the difference in sound quality between say, a budget Nokia and Sansa clip+ or similar? Currently I see no reason to buy an mp3 player because my phone can hold equal amount of music, and it means I have to carry only one device in my pocket and I save money.

A lot

Clip+ is pretty great little audio player. Can go rounds with my S9

Your phone is horrible sound quality, unless it's based solely or have branched off of a media player.

Just suck it up, get a Clip+ and put some FLAC on it for best results.
