i thought this would be an interesting question to ask head-fi, because everyone seems to have an opinion on it.

for the longest time i got by with 1, 2, 4gb. then i moved up to 8gb, and that's where i would have stayed if it wasn't for my grado headphones and amp! i got a 16gb microSD for the sole purpose of putting high-bitrate albums on it. personally i don't see the point of having much more space than that. i like to rotate the albums i'm listening to pretty regularly; if i lump everything in together i'm not encouraged to listen to new acquisitions because the old guard is all still there. basically i think less storage encourages more variety in music listening, which is a good thing!

let us know how much space you carry and why!

OK then,I voted 32-64GB. 32GB on my Touch, and 40GB on my D2, and they are the two most used in my stable.smily_headphones1.gif

currently 8Gb because I'm borrowing a 16gb ipod nano 4th and I'm just too lazy to convert my FLAC files to ALAC, sort of forcing myself until I get totaly sick of it and feel urged to upgrade(quite there already) but I refuse to upgrade to something with a touch screen, wich I hate. ironically I have a touch screen phone that was gifted to me and I've been wanting to get rid off for months.

You know it had never ocurred to me that "less storage encourages more variety in music listening" but I have to admit that you might be right.

I use 10 (!) of my 11 DAP's regularely. I have a huge music collection and have distributed music on the DAP's according to genres. I just pick DAP according to which genre I feel like listening to. My experience is that when I have limited capacity on my DAP's, I tend to pick old favorites instead of new stuff. So for me it is like this: the bigger the capacity, the more variation in my listening.

Having multipe DAP's works better for me than one big DAP. It keeps the number of artists at a relatively low number on each DAP, so I don't need to scroll endlessly to find something to listen to. I just pick a "Progressive Rock" DAP (Cowon S9 and iRiver H120) or a "Thrash metal" DAP (Zen Vision:M) and listen to the stuff that's on there.

The total capacity is around 200GB, so I chose the 120GB alternative.

The JVC XA HD500 that I picked today only has 6GB capacity...

8gb clip+ with an 8gb SDHC, i just fill it and stick it on shuffle, plenty of variety there. Hoping for a 32gb SDHC for my birthday, then i'll have 40gb which will do me fine. Easy, small and powerful.

Even though I voted in the poll based on the two most used, I may as well post them all here.

In order of capacity.....

1) 4GB

2) 8GB

3) 16GB

4) 8GB plus 16GB microsdhc

5) 32GB

6) 8GB plus 32GB SDHC
