op and other amp topologies

I've been reading some of the amp threads and started to wonder why designer choose certain topologies for SS and tube designs. I'd like to know more about it, so I'm starting this thread in Sound Science for references on understanding the whys and wherefores of amp design.

To respect the forum, please don't point me to links by the banned, ok? I'm perfectly capable of finding those myself, but I find his explanations a little opaque. I've got a science background, but from the bio side. I have read a standard text (library book) on op amps and circuits, but it gave the fundamentals, not why someone would choose a particular way to put these things together.

Thanks,

If you would like a book...

Douglas Self - Power Amplifier Design Handbook

Great book that goes through a lot of SS design fundamentals.  Unfortunately, I don't know too many good strictly tube amp books out there; a lot of engineers bypass talking about them.

Enjoy!!

Read nutshell hifi, a tiny history of high fidelity:

The rest of Lynn's site is awesometoast too. Spend a few days digging around in there. His articles on THD are outstanding.

I had a feeling the Self Book would come up. I was balking at dropping $50+ on it, but it looks as though there are some deals on Amazon for it.

Thanks for for the Lynne link. That looks like a good combination of narrative and facts.

Walt Jung's OP Amp Applications book is amazing, free, online and the 1st 2 sections give history and basic circuit topology

full appreciation requires fairly high level of circuit reading ability but you may get some use without

Headwize is archived, many popular amps, some commercialized started as projects there - also don't miss the rest of the Library
