First of all, I would like to say I am new to this community, as I just recently decided to get involved with quality headphones and audio gear. I started researching on quality head gear for a reasonable price, and so far, within 6 moths, I became a proud owner of a pair of Xears Resonance IEM's and ATH-M50 cans. So far I am very happy with both pieces of hardware, as I was used to low-end Sony IEM's and other cheap earbuds. I never imagined listening to music with more analytical, clear and colourful sounding hardware would be so enjoyable and interesting.
My portable source for the past 3 years has been a 6th Gen iPod Classic 80GB. I read how the sound quality output of the headphone jack of the 6th Gen classic wasn't so good compared to other players, and I couldn't tell the difference until I started using better headphones. Even my Nokia N95 mobile phone sounded noticeably clearer. The iPod's sound started sounding a bit dark not without relatively good separation. Recently I equipped it with a Fiio E1 amp, which also bypasses the circuits prior to the headphone jacks and does a nice job clearing the sound and even adding some colour. Considering it's low price, I was content with my purchase, even though the cable should be a lot shorter.
However, my iPod's screen is now cracked after I tried to open it up to replace the battery, and now I can't watch videos. I'm pretty sure a replacement screen (plus service charge) will be very costly, and thus not worth it, in my country (Cyprus) as most official distributors of electronics here suck at service and are very expensive. I won't get into changing the screen myself, this iPod is stupidly difficult to open. I fixed a lot of laptops when I was working part-time as a student at Toshiba's local service for 3 summers in a row and never had a problem, but trying to open my iPod to simply change a battery wasn't only unsuccessful, but also made me mess up the screen big time. Bummer.
I will be leaving my country in about 6 weeks for military officer training in Greece. I will stay there for about 3 months and having a broken iPod is something I wouldn't like. So I'll use this as an opportunity to buy a new mp3/mp4 player. I mostly consider the 7th Gen Classic for a variety of reasons, like the fact that the interface is second nature to me (including the click-wheel) after using iPods for over 6 years now and that I wouldn't like to waste my recently purchased Fiio E1. However I would like to now if it's sound quality is noticeably better from the 6th Gen. Generally, I am also aware of other mp3/mp4 players and I am open to suggestions. Basically I am looking for a player that has a big storage space (lets say over 30GB), decent battery life, video support (mp4 preferably) and last but not least, ease of use and ability to accurately control when browsing the menus or seeking in an audio or video file.
Thanks in advance people
