headphone amplifier for hifiman he 5le

Hello everyone,

I've been reading the head-fi forum for a while but it's the first time i decide to ask your help. As the title indicates i am in search of an amplifier suitable for the he 5le headphones.

I have read many threads about the specific subject and many opinions already discussed but i have some questions to make now that my time has come to buy one amp.dt880smile.png

To inform you about my old rig:

  • SOURCE: PC -> SUPER PRO audio dac
  • HEAD AMP: T-100MKII
  • HP: AKG K701

To inform you about the music i listen to:

Mostly blues genres, blues rock and a little bit of classic rock and hip hop. I miss the bass the akg's lack in but i live the mids in the music i listen to. Sometimes i tend to listen at high volumes, so i want the amplifier capable of doing that. In general i hope to achieve a better listening experience after using my old rig for 4,5 years.

I am a little bit confused with all the threads in here about the hifiman hp. Some users say that an integrated amp is the best solution while some others believe that a hp amplifier is all you need. I need your help because in my country i cannot test any of the devices i want to buy. The budget i can afford is about 700 euros or 1000 us dollars max (icluding shipping costs). If i find an amp suitable, but in a lower price range i will definetely select this option.

It would be very helpful if the owners of the headphones mentioned above expressed their opinion on the dilema. If i buy an integrated amp in the end, will i have any problems destroying the headphones ???

I' ve read a thread about this amp: http://www.sacthailand.com/Amp2010MinuteEL34.html and i would like to know if anyone bought this amplifier and how did it match the hifiman headphones. Is the seller reliable too ?

Thanks in advance............

See the discussions of amps for the HE6 and HE500.

I've focused down to the following:

1.  B22

2.  Vioelectric V200 or V181

3.  EF5

4.  Integrated speaker amp (e.g. NAD, or something similar).

Those would be the ones I'd consider.

thanks for the answer.

i reconsider the option of the V200 as a possible one, even though it exceeds my budget.

anyone know anything about the reliability of connecting the cans to an integrated amp???

Well... see the HE-6 thread... you'll find all you need to know.

And... the Head-Direct site has an adapter available.

I doubt the HE500's are so efficient you couldn't use a speaker amp to drive them.  Though, I'd likely stick with one with lower power output, such as the 30-50 watt NAD's.  And... I'd consider one with a headphone out jack - to drive my other phones.

Of course, you need to take the normal precautions, when using such an amp with any phones - turn on the amp, and turn the POT down to 0, before plugging in your phones, turn up the POT very slowly, and unplug your phones before turning it off.
