you forgot to tell us what IEMs where you using

If you're in a jamb to get your tips out of your ears, I found the plug on the cord is a good tool if your sound nozzle diameter is similar to a MTPC or triple.fi. Carefully push the plug through the hole in the tip. Push it to the side of your ear canal to compress the foam, then tilt the plug and use it to slide out the tip. For a Shure 530 or Westone sized IEM, this won't work. (Interesting, the editor wouldn't take the word I originally used for "tilt")

The word "OUCH!" comes to mind as I happen upon this thread. I was using a pair of Victor HP-FX500's with Sony Hybrid tips, Large (white color coded core), and an iPhone. The ringer went off while listening to music. Not a good idea to have the ringer volume very high compared to the music volume; in retrospect.

Moral of the story, I yanked the screamingly loud IEM's out of my ears while the phone was ringing, and the Left tip SHOT UP INSIDE my ear canal. Went to the Emergency Room, waited for 3 hours, and finally seen by a very shocked male nurse who exclaimed, "HOW THE HECK DID THAT GET _ALL THE WAY_ UP THERE!!!"

Oh, yeah, and intense pain for 6 or 7 hours.

I think that experience was DEFINITELY one of my unluckiest.

I think the male nurse was shocked at how you managed to defy physics. So, you pulled OUT your iems and then shot further INTO your ears?...

interdasting..

The tip was held in place while the shaft was stretched by the IEM and released, rubberbanding it further into the ear

I once had one of the dual flange tips from my ER-6's stuck in my ear, tweezed it out.

on my new IEMS (UM3x EX-1000's so far) I'm going w/ custom tips.

This is the reason I can't stand Etys.  LOL.  I'll stick with the shallower fitting GR07s. :)

well they have custom tips for the ER-6i's (and hence compatible with my ER-6's) available and I'm quite fond of my ER-6's I might pull the trigger at some point, but I have more IEM's to buy.

DAYUM. That sounds insane. Well this keeps happening with my tf10, so I intend to get them reshelled soon. Really can't stand the boom it makes when the rubber tip gets released in my ear.

This happened to me one time on a flight from NYC to L.A.  I was using a pair of Etymotics and had jammed them into my ears nice 'n tight to drown out the sound of a crying baby (and probably to compensate for a poor fit).  I pulled them out to stand up and go to the bathroom, but one of the flanged tips lodged in my ear.  I don't know if it was a result of the change in air pressure, but the pain was excruciating.  I made several trips to the bathroom to try to get at them, but only succeeded in pushing them in further.  Finally one of the flight attendants gave me a pair of tweezers and it took me close to an hour to finally fish them out.  Probably not the earphones' fault, but I haven't used Etymotics since.

This happens to my with triple flanges on my DBA-02s only sometimes. Luckily, I have long fingernails, so I can pull them out. Over time, the triple flanges tear a little bit and need to be replaced. For all my other IEMs (I used Sony Hybrids for all my other iems), the tip just inverts but stays on the nozzle.

Happened to me all the time with the B2s and more recently with the Triple Fi 10s. The TF10 problem was solved with using sony hybrid tips instead of the stock ones. You'd think manufacturers would have a notch in the stem and smaller diameter stems to help remedy this problem.

I managed this feat with a tri-flange. It was easy to remove it using 3.5mm plug.

I wrap a teflon tape around the nozzle to increase diameter size.

Happened to me with my custom 3's but I could grab it out. Also I don't see this as a reason not to have iems, I see this as a reason to have ciems =P

I had a similar situation that required tweezers and was very painful. I went to full custom sleeves on my universal iems and custom in-ear monitors and haven't looked back.
