Looking for the right Bluetooth Stereo Headphone with Mic for me.

Thread Starter

I'm switching from wired headphones to wireless and I want to make the right choice. So many brands, so many setup possible = a bit lost, need your help guys.

Here's some rule/condition I must be able to:

  • Technology:
    Bluetooth: Yes (1st choice)
RF: It could be RF, but the fact that I need a usb dungle (or even worse, a duck station) to be plugged all the time makes me turn over to the bluetooth (2nd choice)
IR: no way (cuz I don't want to be stuck in front of my screen when making call like on a duck station)
  • Making phone calls with laptop at home  <-- Need a mic (built-in, nothing external)
  • Making phone calls with laptop outsite home   <-- because of this, I can forget about any models that require a dock station. No way I bring this dock each time I go out (way too cumbersome).
  • Mobility is priority so: Bluetooth only (no IR & no RF models because RF require some usb dungle to be plugged into the source... What happens if I'm out and I want to use my headphone on another computer/device there ? I can't because I didn't bring my dungle with me)
  • Transmission range: 3-4 meter MINIMUM, 10 meters preferably
  • Listening to music and play games <-- so I need at least some sound quality for these situation (can be basic sound quality)
  • NO Ear bud: I hate it. The size of the headphones should be Neither too big because I need to be able to lay comfortably on my bed with them on. (i.e something the size of the Senheiser traveler 450 is perfect, 550 to the limit)
  • Battery: built-in okay (15 hours autonomy minimum). OR interchangable battery to increase mobility even more (no need of any wire to charge)

Well this is it.

Waiting for some help :)

About the only can I can recommend is the Sennheiser MM 450 travel

It's on a Headfi Tv, episode 7 I think

The blutooth tech has it's problems and to have good audio quality, you have to pay a premium.

Other then that, everything sounds cheap and you just get a better looking device then anything else.

If you want full sized cans, you can ask. But bluetooth is stuck to portables

Thanks,

what about the Turtle Beach product ? (I think the Ear force PX5 support both RF and Bluetooth) (it has a dock station for when @ home, and is bluethooth ready for when going outside... I think..)

I don't mind paying a premium. Just can't find any.

That is the premium. 450 travel is the only can, other then it's big brother the around ear, which I can tell you to get

Other then that, all the others will just look better, have more volume and sound like a ear peice

Watch Headfi Tv episode 7 to have him tell you about them

Will watch this episode.

Well the only reason I did not want the "around ear" ones is that I suppose that it's uncomfortable laying in a bed when on a phone call over IP... maybe I'm wrong with this, I've never tried. If it happens to be as comfortable as any other smaller sets, I'd be more than happy to buy one. Do you have any idea ?

Thanks again

X2 on MM 450 Travel. The bigger, circumaural model is the MM 550 Travel.

I just watched episode 7. Indeed the  MM 450 look very interesting, but he didn't talk much about my most important feature: the microphone...

I have no experience with Built-in Microphone (no stick in front of mouth) .. so I always wonder if it really capture the voice correctly ..... He didn't talk much about it in his video... anyone ?

If you don't mind having a separate setup for the laptop and gaming, try looking into the Astro Wireless MixAmp 5.8. You could plug in an existing, wired headphone into the unit.

Thanks Eric for this suggestion. However, Astro MixAmp wouldn't suit my needs since I'm trying to be as free as possible. With this device, I would have to carry the Astro on me when I move away from the laptop...

What's this big brother around ear one you're talking about ? Can you tell me more ?

Also. I see that the MM 550 is'nt that big even if it cover the full ear. Do you think this would still be comfortable layed on a bed with this ?

That is the around ear model

Even the industry insider said so.

It's a premium and I wouldn't mind out paired to my Cowon S9

ah... just think:

Cowon S9 with long battery life

Bluetooth headset

walking around without Cowon through my apartment.

Awesome.

2 Questions:

1- The only reason I did not want the "around ear" ones is that I supposed it would be uncomfortable when layed on a bed making calls on skype... maybe I'm wrong with this? I've never tried any. If it happens to be as comfortable as any other smaller sets, I'd be more than happy to buy one. Do you have any idea ?

2- I see that the MM 550 is'nt as big as many other "around the ear" units, Do you think this would still be comfortable layed on a bed with this, or would it be to cumbersome?

I don't see the point of having a seperate bluetooth receiver when you can have one built-in your headphone directly ?

The point would be that there is a very limited number of headphones with Bluetooth built-in. If you have a favourite headphone already, and the only thing it lacks is Bluetooth, then the receiver would let you add that functionality to an otherwise perfect solution.

The MM 550 Travel are very comfortable, circumaural headphones. They may not be as large as the HD 650 or HD 800 but they'll provide you with a nice, snug fit and won't fall off easily. Personally, I prefer them to the MM 450 Travel wink_face.gif
