Recording qualiy is the biggest factor. A great recording on the iBuds is enjoyable, while a bad recording on high-end equipment is awful.

After recording quality, the transducer matters most.

Definitely agree with Uncle Eric there.  Without a proper recording, it won't sound good no matter what gear is used.

Also should include case/shell in there, i could make HD800 drivers sound bad given the right shells.

The recording quality falls under Music File/Codec.
