Record player/stereo setup help?

Hello all --

I'm a biiiiig music fan with basically no budget.  I've got an enormous record collection, but the worst possible setup to support it.

I have an old Denon receiver and speakers that my mother bought from the sharper image YEARS ago and recently gave to me, and an ion turntable that I bought for about 50 bucks on woot.  The speakers actually don't sound too bad (they're small, but relatively powerful), and obviously I need to upgrade the ion, but the thing that kills me most is that receiver has the worst headphone output.  Is this common?  It's a 3.5mm output, and just sounds atrocious.

How can I fix this?  What suggestions would you guys make to help me slowly upgrade everything?

There probably isn't a lot you can do for it without a headphone amp. It would likely be a big improvement to run some cables from a line out on the back to a headphone amp but if you have no budget you obviously can't get an amp. If you have even some income, you can save your pennies and get an amp that will mesh well with your headphones.
