Few questions?

Thread Starter

Hello,
I've been around for a while searching your forums to seek for a answers to my questions, I found some but I would like to ask more closely about these things.

So, I am gaming freak, playing FPS games such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Quake, CSS, CS and sometimes Team Fortress 2. You probably think "another stupid gaming kid", yeah that's what I am =D!

Well anyways, I've been searching for a while ( I have read that thread about gaming headphones) and I've found these headphones very good for gaming and for music too (according to different peoples recommendation):

AKG k701 or 702 (How big is the difference?)
Senhheiser HD 555 or 598
Beyerdynamic DT-880
Audio Technica AD700

Any other to mention?

So, is there really any big differences between these, what are they? I am gonna use them mainly for gaming, also for listening to music but the sound quality isn't really that matters much as long as I can hear every footstep and gunsound in-game.

Then there goes another important thing regarding to gaming audio. Soundcard.

So which soundcard is best for gaming. I have no idea about soundcards, how much differences there are in low-end and high-end soundcards.

So again I searched through threads and these was suggested:
X-Fi XtremeGamer or Music
Some Audigy soundcard, which is the best?

And last but not least, the amplifier.
For a start can you explain what does it really do and is there any idea to buy one for gaming, it is just the same to play without it. Does it really give you any noticeable boost to your performance? Please suggest something for headphones mentioned before!

Last question, not so important, heh:) There is always some information about headphones like frequency, impedance etc. So anyone care to explain what are good values and how to decode all this stuff in to a language that normal people can understand and can use that information as a advantage when searching for headphones.

So there are my many questions, I look forward to dive even deeper to the great sea of AUDIOPHILIA!

None whatsoever - try integrated soundcards.

Amplifiers are ESSENTIAL for gaming, they often at times for me determine a win or loss for a game (especially in competitive gaming). I find that the increased outtage of Ohms really helps in defining the frequency of the footsteps - An important part of my analysis when playing a game for me.

Hope I helped.

Just pull the trigger on whatever tickles your fancy, live with them for a little, judge them, and use that experience to help pick out future purchases. It's not the end of the world if you get something you don't like. Reviews and impressions can only get you so far.

I had the AD700's for gaming, they were ok. Not so good with music though.

Get whatever sound card that does them fancy effects, I don't remember what it was called. Worry about the amp when it becomes a problem.

I have the impression that with ANY set of cans or IEMS - you can grow to love them.

I see this clearly in the example of the RE0's, where a vast minority (hmmm..) purchase them on the vehement praise offered by our senior members - then they find that the bass is 'lacking' and the revealing nature is considered a tad brash in its representation of all the mids and highs.

It took me a while to get used to the ath-ad700's. But I must say that I use them more than my LCD-2's dues to their comfort. So realistically speaking, SQ isn't everything.

Yeah it's possible to get used to a sound signature, but at the end of the day, everything comes down to personal preferences.

For instance, I don't hear bright headphones as 'detailed', as much as I hear them as 'murderous'. tongue.gif
