Recabling Question: Sleeving

Sorry for yet another thread, but I've been reading old threads for hours and I'm still uncertain about this particular question.

This is my first time attempting a DIY project. I need to re-cable my (currently broken) Audio-Technica ES7's, with some Mogami 2534's.

Should I strip off the rubber jacket, braid the wires, then sleeve them in nylon multifilament? I have seen some people just slip the nylon multifilament over the rubber jacket - is there a point to this? Shouldn't the rubber jacket be sufficient protection?

If I don't use any nylon sleeving, and just leave the part from the plug to the Y-split in the stock rubber jacket, would it be too stiff? What if I used 2893's instead? I want flexibility.

If I were to strip off the rubber jacket, would 3/16" nylon multifilament be a good size for before the Y-split with the 2534's??

What's the best way to get the sleeving around the wires?

Thanks

2893 is smaller and lighter, though I have not tried it myself.  I do recommend nylon sleeving, nylon over cotton if you want less microphonics, and yes, remove the rubber jacket and shielding, it adds weight and stiffness and you will be fine without it.  No need to braid, the stock geometry is perfect, so less work.  To sleeve the cabling, I put painter's tape around the end and make a cone or so.  You don't want the sleeving snagging on edges.  I think, it's easier to tin the ends of the wires first before sleeving and heatshrink and what not.

Awesome, I think that's what I'm going to do, thanks

I'd recommend leaving on the outer jacket, bare wires are a lot less durable, but that's just me, what do I know.

Shouldn't the sleeving provide sufficient protection? Keep in mind that this is pretty much only going to be for desktop use.

Totally.
