I just got it in the mail and it has crackling, sound is horrible and half-assed.  I will try a different cable but the one I tried came with my Sirrus radio and was new in box

It all depends on the quality of the CMoy amp you get.

I got a Shellbrook MaxiMoy 6+ years ago... and... it sounds virtually as good as my much more expensive tube & tube hybrid amps.  Quite amazing really.

Shellbrook is no longer around, but you can occasionally find one of their amps on the FS Forum.  And... I'm sure there are many other versions out there that sound great also.

I tried two other cables, same thing. it is in a Penguin Peppermint case and has an on/off swithc and a volume knob

The gain might be too high.

I bought it used off hardforum.com

But mine has a power switch and the volume control

is the battery fully charged? I heard crackling from a cmoy when the 9V battery was dying.

battery or something is very wrong. Mine works and sounds great, and is in a plastic case, but my AKG's dont need it, so am looking to sell it. I got it from Ebay, its a CSG EU one, looks very professionally made inside.

What is your source? An amplifier will only make a bad source sound worse. Garbage in, garbage out.

Well that's the problem with used equipment.  Apparently that's why the first owner sold it.

Contact the seller and return it if you can.
