Amp for XB500 "In your face" bass thump from XB1000s?

Thread Starter

Hello all, I've been doing some searching on Head-Fi for some amp recomendations to liven up my XB1000s but it seems that these aren't too popular around here. I'm looking for an amp, or preferably a amp and DAC combo standalone unit that will add extra bass thump to my XB1000s, exclusively for desktop use.

I love the comfort and large soundstage from my XB1000s but the thumpy "in your face" bass of my previous XB500s is just not there, especially from my motherboard audio out. Any help would be greatly appreciated, not really looking for anything too expensive.. Fiio E9 + E7 combo is what i'm leaning towards right now, but the TubeMagic D1 seems like a great alternative.

Forgot to add what I listen to..

70% Electrohouse

10% Trance

10% Dubstep

10% Hip-Hop

E9 + E7 is a good combination but as far as I know once you dock the e7 you loose the ability to boost the bass with the Eq presets in it.

I really like the bass boost on the e7, but for HP with less bass than my DT990s.

If you're using a computer as source you can always us a little Eq.

What's the best way to change EQ using a PC?

Could you clarify what you mean here? What is HP?

Thanks.

Ok no problem, let me clarify:

If you're using a PC the most logical thing to do is to use Foobar2k instead of iTunes or Windows Media Player for playback. With Foobar you can add an equalizer on your DSP stack in the preferences of the program.

That way you can change the Equalization of the music.

HP = Headphone  :)

Thank you very much!

I'm thinking that I might pick up the E7 initially and may get the E9 later for the power if I need it. Can the E7 operate as a DAC and amp by itself? IE Can i plug it into my computer via USB and have it amplify my audio right to my headphones?

Sure and its very handy for your mobile rig, I use it as DAC and feed a Meier Corda HeadFive amp.

You can always go for an Amp-DAC solution, there are MANY options, te Fiio is a good start.

This is what you want, IMO the best sounding sub-$100 offering. http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/558850/digizoid-zo-personal-subwoofer-review-the-missing-link-to-audio-nirvana

You can read more about all kinds of satisfied customers here http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/504037/mini-review-digizoid-zo-portable-subwoofer

This device packs more bass than you would ever want as well as bringing other audible improvements. But it won't hurt if going for a new DAC either if you're on integrated onboard sound. :p But this device brings also a huge improvement to that.

Thanks for elaborating, the ZO definitely seems like something I'm interested in. Will it have enough power to drive my XB1000s? And can I just leave it plugged in via USB desktop use?

Thanks.

I've personally never come across an amp that play with more "slam" and dynamic impact than the Burson HA-160 (from what I understand maybe a b22 but I've never heard one), probably complete overkill for the XB1000 but there you have it.

We should find out in a week or so how it works since I have a Burson HA-160 and have ordered the XB1000, not my usualy gig but I do like electronica so I'm looking forward to trying them out.

Well power-wise it delivers a little more current than FiiO E11 which is very popular atm, XB1000 seems to be a headphone that optimally wants quite a lot of power due to 70mm drivers but the way this device boosts bass isn't that dependant on the amount current, you'll get stronger bass punch than you probably are looking for even at around half level of max anyway, it has 31 different levels of bass boost. Depending on the headphone we're talking about maybe 12 ~ 15dB bass boost capability or so (the amps with biggest boost usually go up to 12dB, Arrow and some of the Cmoy portable amps), I like to use the first level which adds around 2.5dB or so I think (there will be released a v2 soon, maybe august/september that will feature volume control and more bass contour levels, probably less of a boost for the first level at least).

I use my ZO only with my desktop comp so I got it plugged in for recharging all the time so I don't have to worry about it but if you use the USB port for recharging there's a big risk that you'll hear static noise which is the computer's fault not the device's (happens with all other devices too) but you could do like me that bought an USB power adapter that converts the USB interface to an AC plug so you can recharge it directly from the wall socket and then it will be completely silent. Here you'll find a few examples http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dmobile&field-keywords=ac+usb&x=0&y=0#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dmobile&field-keywords=ac+usb+adapter&rh=n%3A2335752011%2Ck%3Aac+usb+adapter (you should find them in a local marketplace too). I would just check so that the rated output is ofc no higher than voltage: 5.0 V and ampere is perhaps somewhere around 0.7 ~ 1.0 A or it says it's compatible with MP3 players and alike but most should be 5.0V and ~750mA. The one I bought was specced 0.8 A.

The device has really nice working bass boost, it adds a lot of impact rather than bloating the bass all over the mids, it should definitely help to give you the most "in-your-face" bass like XB500 features. XB1000 is also described as being a little more laid-back and this amp makes the sound a little more forward sounding, not just stronger bass, it does this for the whole range by an added 7~10dB or so boost depending on headphone so I think it would be a good fit for this headphone but I personally am a fan of forward sound so I like how it makes my XB500 sound like even if that's a very forward sounding headphone for starters. :P It makes the hardstyle I listen most to these days output the bass that it was meant for (subwoofers) so that this genre sounds the way it was meant to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWBwJ4BH43k&hd=1#t=01m59s (not overpowering bass = not enough bass is a good measure in this genre, melodies are supposed to take the 2nd seat when bass kicks in :p)

Finally I can say volume wise when I tested comparing on the onboard chip (I usually use an Audigy 2 ZS card) I went from like 35 - 37% to 10 - 12% on the windows volume slider (we're probably talking about somewhere in the range 70 ~ 80dB output volume), so volume-wise there shouldn't be any issues.

Contact DigiZoid themselves, I did that when ordering from Finland as there's no places in europe that sells them and 8 days later I had it (they have paypal). :p They didn't even charge anymore than $15 for handling/shipping to the other side of the globe almost. :D I bought a slightly imperfect sample for a bit less as it had a very tiny blemish on the surface.

Good to hear! Does it really bring the "in-your-face" bass you were looking for out of XB1000? I bet you notice other improvements as well.

Don't hesitate to share your experience in the http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/504037/mini-review-digizoid-zo-portable-subwoofer thread which is in the portable amps section as this is a portable amp and not a full-sized. :)
