hearing artifacts in 320kbps MP3 files

hello,

i just noticed that i can hear artifacts in 320kbps MP3 files with my Ed. 8 and Pico DAC. i'm gonna check if i can hear it at home with my X-Fi HD.

it's a faint sound of random compression noise in the background. i can't hear it with flac files. i hear it regardless if i use ASIO4ALL or WaveOut.

is this normal? are my settings wrong? i use in/out Latency Compensation 32 samples and ASIO Buffer Size = 192 samples. there are no clicks or pops.

thanks!

It is rare but not impossible.

Some music is very sensitive to compression artefacts.

Often this manifest itself as a pre-echo.

You might Google a little on “killer samples” or try this link: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=70598

I also got similar experience when trying the ed8 before, and i believe its somehow related to the s-logic.. I think you may find its harder to notice those "noises" on other headphones

maybe my gear reached a point where loss-less files actually have a clear advantage over high-quality MP3... i haven't noticed this with my Westone 4, but i haven't tried them with the Pico.

Are you using LAME? Also, 320 kbps mp3 has some noise. The noise pretty much goes away with a more efficient VBR setting, or as an alternative AAC and Vorbis are completely noiseless, IIRC.
