x2.

I had made a point of RE272 sounding best when balanced driven in my RE272 review, but recently I acquired the infamous O2 and it also drive the RE272 really well. Those who have a chance should really try them out.

How close is the performance with the RE272 between the O2 and balanced?

Very close. RE272 has a little more body when balanced driven. But with O2, it has really good soundstage and layer. No doubt RE272 is benefited from O2's separation and transparency, which are some of the best I have heard on portable amp.

ClieOS, by O2 do you mean digiZoid ZO2?

Those that have tried the RE272, and were quick to judge them as thin sounding, need to realize that they take some burn in to sound their best.  Nanchai (Dr. Fong/Hifiaman) states that they really "start to open up with 200 - 250 hrs", mine have over 350 hrs.  That has been my experience, I use Ts400 Comply tips and they are my favorite IEM....after I paired them with the 2Stepdance.  I have had the RE262's three different times and returned them all three times....the RE272 with a slight EQ below 60hz are just the best...very good sub bass, beautiful mids, and very good extended highs....very balanced/transparent just as ClieOS review ranks them at number one in their category.

these puppies have put a permamnent hold on my upgraditis hunger

unless they break (and lets not forget they come with a 3-year warranty) i don't see me upgrading to another universal iem any time soon

(besides i also have the eq5 for a more mid-centric flavour after all)

odd though , not seeing too much love in here for these

Lots of love here/me....I set Parametric EQ 31hz and 60hz Q= .7, and Gain= +3db on both, along with MEEL Large Double Flange tips, totally refined, top tier sound!  Mine have over 500 hrs!  Beautiful mids to die for!

What in the world?! These things are amazing. I mean shockingly good. Yeah there are flaws , but after a few hours of listening, my goodness are these good. Yeah, the bass doesn't have a ton of kick and can be a bit fluttery. But the treble is fantastic, the mids are great and the detail stunning. The soundstage is really impressive and natural.

I can actually stand listening to cello and violin on these, which in my opinion the Se535 sucks at and the W4 is only not bad. Brahm's Cellos Sonatas w/ Rosrtopovich was fantastic; really not far from my HD600 on some tracks, though without any of that Sennheiser chillacknes.  In Rainbows sounds as it should, one of the best mastered albums ever. But I can totally get why some can't just enjoy the music with these; there is a lot going on here. Its ear crack all right. The RE272 has a lot of glory but is also just... a lot to take!

But I'd say that every headfier needs to spend some time with these. They're really different from all the other top tiers I've heard.

If you can EQ the low end, as in my post above, they sound better than most IEM's that I have had......W4R, GR07. FXT90 ASG-1, Sony 7550, on and on, this is the one I kept!  What makes them even better are the Custom Molds that I got from Dale at Aurisonics (bigger soundstage, better separation, deeper sub bass)!  Once I heard them with the Custom Molds, I sold my W4R....the RE272 with Custom Molds are pretty much flawless as an analytical IEM.  I retuned my Phonak 232's as they were bettered as well!  The RE272 pairs very well with the 2Stepdance by Meier Audio!
