Hi

CLAS+iPod+portable amp OR HM-801 for best SQ

I want to buy a portable rig to use with predominatly IEMs (i have IE8's atm). The main use is air travel and weekends away and ocassionally at work which is a desk environment.

Which is going to get me the best sound quality?

Cheers.. Room40

HM-801 has a better DAC I believe, upgradable amp, and 24/96 capable.

Ipod has better UI, better form factor and visual appeal

I would go with HM-801. I'm considering it too..

Hi

I have HM801(the amp isn't relevant here as I used line out, but for infomation purposes it is GAME) used with SR71B and JH13, twag interconnect and upgraded JH13 cable.

A couple of months ago bought CLAS and ipod Classic 160gb (same amp and IEMs).

Side by side I noticed an immediate improvement in clarity and detail of the CLAS combo over HM801; together with the benefits of UI.

Pending receipt of the JH-3A to replace JH13/SR71B (will use the 71B with my HD800), I have decided to 'rest' the HM801.

This is purely my own subjective decision and should point out that in my mid 50's I don't benefit from the higher frequencies as many would. Also, I listen, exclusively, to classical music, but I am sticking with the CLAS combo until the JH-3A arrives.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the replies

Im going to go with the CLAS for a few reasons but mainly all the threads I read gravitate towards the CLAS.

Im just not sure what amp yet. It could be the P4.. The SR-71B appears only to be worth the 600+ if you go balanced.

Id get the woody L3 but now Im not sure of charging it as Triad arent selling chargers or power supplies like they did with the first LIII. Either way its CLAS here I come.

Cheers.. Room

Great post and thanks for the comparison.  Please repeat this when you receive the JH3a.

Instinctually, I'd think the CLAS solution would be better for the same reason why we like separate components in home-fi.  You can choose what components you like- granted there are only a few DAC choices at the moment.  The downside of the multiple box approach is having to charge all of those devices separately.  Perhaps you might also consider the Fostex HP-P1?

I actually have one on order from these guys.  They said they are supposed to be in any day now (I was told July 29 a week ago).  It sounds like they (Fostex) were off to a slow start in bringing them into the U.S. and demand is somewhat high(?).  The nice thing about this is that you can always put an amp after it, depending upon your requirements or what you are driving.  Then you can be like this guy:  biggrin.gif

I know a guy who knows a guy who has a CLAS/RxII.  So maybe if this thing ever does arrive we could do a quick comparo, since for some reason there aren't many out there.  No names... *cough* Jude *cough*.
