Question about bitrates

Thread Starter

So this is a newb question, but I can't find what I'm looking for on the internet..

I just finished installing and configuring foobar2k with WASAPI. I've got a bunch of 320kbps MP3s playing through foobar2k > WASAPI > SPDIF out to EMU 0404, and I'm confused about the right bit/khz setting.

The EMU 0404 can manage 24bit, so I've set foobar2k and my SPDIF output to 24bit. Most of my music is in 44.1khz, and I read there is no point in upsampling, correct? So is setting 24bit in foobar2k WASAPI and 24bit/44.1khz output in my SPDIF driver the right thing to do?

No need to worry, you can safely set the output at 24bits. The 24bits content you might have will play correctly, and the 16bits (or lower) will just have padding, or zero filled, and you'll have perfectly ok playback.

Upsampling is a controversial matter, different people have different opinions. Honestly, I think you should try it for yourself and see what sounds best to you. After all, your ears are what matters most, right? :)
