How do you adjust an EQ?

This is probably a very basic process, but I've always ignored adjusting the EQ simply because whenever I tried to adjust it, my music would sound weird. Like the preset ones in a media player (i.e. iPod or iTunes), they always sound really terrible, in my opinion.

How do you guys adjust your EQ? Especially people who use PMP's with adjustable EQ's such as the Sansa Clip+ or Cowon J3.

I have my VLC EQ adjusted in a "w" shape right now for my Sennheiser CX-300's just for the fun of it and it actually sounds all right for once.
