Why remove the price from a sold listing in the FS forum?

Thread Starter

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering why the common practice seems to be to delete the price or replace it with the word 'sold' when a listing has been sold?  It would seem that it would be helpful to let people interested in the product learn what the going rate is for a used version, and as long as it is marked somewhere in the ad that the listing is sold, there shouldn't be any confusion....

So, is there any reason that I'm missing here for this common yet seemingly unhelpful practice?

Wasn't there a bet going on about how long it'd take for another one of these threads to pop up?

This is a fairly common question, and there are many reasons. Some have fire sales in times of desperate need and don't want to skew market value. Some do because they just don't like leaving it up there for people to see. Others just do it.

But yeah I agree it can be annoying. I've looked for a general price I should pay for something only to see SOLD.

Some also remove the price to stop people PMing them about buying the item even though it's already sold.

The listed prices do not reflect the final negotiation, so you don't really know anyway. I've paid less and more for gear.

Also, this topic has been beaten to death in the past. These threads usually don't end well. Feel free to look up the old ones and you'll see all the arguments.

So I'm going to close this thread before it gets ugly.
