I have Aego M 2.1 speakers and Sennheiser HD 598 headphones. Currently I'm using onboard sound. I'm thinking about purchasing a Xonar Essence ST sound card. Would this be over-kill?

There is really no such hting as overkill here, the better your source is, the more options you have with your system.
You are making quite a jump from onboard to a flagship soundcard.
You should notice a significant upgrade in sound quality.
