Sennheiser HD-598s are the most comfortable headphones I've had the opportunity to use. I recommend these wholeheartedly for any first-time hi-fi buyer because of their excellent soundstage and...
That filter is to help eliminate leakage. Seems they are partially open in the back. That and with those fairly thick Klipsch-like built in ear guides, I think these will be a love or hate kinda of phone. Actually that filter is for soundstage and bass response ala FX700/500. The design seems to be doing a compromise between having an open sound without sacrificing that much isolation.
Reminds of the Bose IE2's with a loop thing for comfort. They don't isolate particularly very well though but I'll reserve my judgement for these until they release here and manage to get a hands on somewhere. Edited by rovex - 7/12/11 at 12:31am
