Record temperatures seen as heat wave plagues 15 states - Page 2

Yeah seems somewhat culturally unique but, often instead of the internationally accepted small talk referances to the weather of the day, upon first meet-up, our friends from  geograpically "downtown", will default to "say hey mate" and " tosin' the shrimp " with or without a Barbie ... Pass the word !

/ At least that was my experience with one Aussie culinary artist , strange folk , never a word for the weather, that bloke ; )

That being said, it's been bloody cold here lately 18C/2C the past week or so.

Had a max daytime temp of 12.1C yesterday - equal coldest day for 8 years. Can't wait for the weather to warm up!

I'll trade you my Australian passport for your Canadian then. It constantly gets to 34C in Summer. tongue.gif

I just spent the last few days installing a radiant barrier in our attic, but the heat went away so i have to wait until Monday maybe to see if this thing actually works. Some say it can drop temps in your house by 30 degrees!

Wimps. All of you, except Balderon. smily_headphones1.gif

We hit 118° F/48° C the other day. Now, that's real heat. We had a nasty haboob, as well.

And the humidity?

I worked in Scottsdale at the Mayo Hospital for a few weeks. Each day was 108-112. It was hot but you didn't sweat as bad. Get off the airplane in New Orleans when it's 95 w 80-90% humidity. I'll take that desert heat.

I completely agree. I was in New Mexico a couple of years ago and the temperature was about 43-45C every day - I thought it was pleasant compared to 35C here. The heat isn't what's unpleasant, it's the humidity.

Of course, now the weather is back down to being pleasant here, so I can't complain too much.

I'm envious.  My 2 a/c units in my home are running quite a bit.  4 filters to change each month, utilities to pay, humidity to deal with ... arg!  When will it end?  I've also had to re-work my attic fan this summer as the one installed last summer died on me.  Needless to say, 3 - 4 trips up to my attic already this summer.  Finally, last evening was the end.  I wrapped my air handler in insulation designed for that purpose, used my DeWalt reciprocating saw to open up some roof plywood that lead to the area above my family room - to get more of the heat out of that area and moving out towards the gable fan.  This morning, I applied a small freon charge to one of my units (the attic unit) and while it was in spec when I started - I was able to modify my readings ever so slightly to tap that last bit of efficiency out of the system and hopefully save a bit more on the utility bills and extend the life of the unit.

This is in Virginia - just outside of Washington, DC.  Don't get me wrong, I like doing the work - it's a good hobby.  However, picking up from a builder's short-comings is the frustrating part.

Ha! You guys haven't experienced a thing yet!! Its hotter than hell here in Bangkok and its also extremely humid all year round. You'll turn into ashes if you went outside unless you take cover in the shades and you'll become drenched by your own sweat after a while. Its horrible here.

Yeah, humidity is pretty bad. I spent a summer in St. Louis. I don't think the humidity ever dropped below 90% and it pushed 100° quite a few days. Taking a shower was almost pointless.

On the other hand, when it hits 115°-120° down here, I find it more threatening. I go through at least one gallon of water a day. It's almost like having to take a prescription of medicine. Do it or the heat will sneak up on you. It also kills my energy earlier in the day, too. I wear out three or four hours earlier than when it's cool out.

Though the nights down here are much better. It's about 90° out right now. Light breeze and I'm out on a patio by a pool. Not bad at all. St. Louis wasn't much fun at night. Still sticky and the mosquitos came out for blood.

The Lou is where I grew up. As kids, we'd play out from mid morning to dark and never had trouble dealing with the weather. Now that I'm an A/C zombie, It takes it out of me to work the yard for a day when it's that humid. You're right though about the heat being more dangerous. Those temps aren't found where humidity is an issue. The humidity is evaporated. The heat will kill if you don't learn how to survive. Cover up and drink water. Do the monsoons bring humidity to that heat UE?

Tropics are brutal for the combo and Thailand is in the Mt. Everest weather chain. Some of the wettest on the planet has to create unusual health risks.
