DIY speakers, good place to start? - Page 2

So the speaker store called me today.

The Aura's (6 inch woofer, Ribbon) were being sold used and I guess the guy that brought them in wanted them back. HE had been calling the store and cussing them out to get his speakers back.

The store called me and asked if I would be so nice as to bring them back, and that they would give me a better set for my troubles. (The people at the store were extremely nice so I agreed)

They gave me a pair of Platinum PT801's (Silk dome, 6.5 inch woofer), which cost (In their store) $50 more, also used.

I took them home.

I don't like them.

The bass distorts and isn't as clear. The high's aren't as sharp. Are they underpowered? I'm going back to the store on Saturday. Should I demand a more powerful amp as well? Or should I try and get some different speakers? Please advise.

Again, the people at the store are very kind and have helped me a lot. I don't think this was intentional....

What amp are you using ? From the info available about the PT801's it looks like they are passive types which would mean you would need an amp. Are you looking for powered monitors perhaps ?

I got a Yamaha RX-550. 60W RMS I believe.

Could be the speakers were stuffed. If you are using a computer as a source make sure you are not double amping the signal or sending a really hot ( > 2.5 V) line level to the Yamaha.

I'm using the D6 lineout... I'm going back on Monday to see what's up... If they can't work out some way to get better sound, I'll probably just bring it all back and get some Audioengine A2's. I know that may seem like a step back but they're half the price and I can't say they're much worse than my current $400 setup. I never get to blast my music anyway, so the bass wouldn't be an issue. A2's are detailed little speakers.

Taking it all back... I tried out some Linaeum LFX's for 100 more bucks and liked them, but I had to buy textbooks. Aww crap. So I'm looking at a set of active monitors under $200 now, What a step backwards. :(

Behringer's maybe? Or M-Audio?

Looking at some good components. Any ideas? Can I use a 6.5 inch Madisound Driver if it fits? Or a 1 inch tweeter?

Car audio is good if you live in an apartment/condo like me since you can crank it freely :)

You can get a very competent set-up for around $500 if you shop smart: go active, buy used amps/gear, use PE/Madisound drivers, and install yourself (crucial).

DIY speakers has been a subject that I have been researching for about 8 months. UE has been more than helpful both here in this thread and with some great answers. THX Uncle Eric!

It seems that is may be better to follow someone who is happy with their results and emulate them. What happens when you do your own research is you find kits that are really somewhat involved and other kits that seem like you may outgrow them.

I wanted to post the Gainphile web address as spending hours looking over his works is amazing. Not only does this guy build zero baffle enclosures he also builds his own ICE or class D amps from boards from China. Many of the things he does go against everything I have ever learned about audio but at the same time it makes me wonder what some of his systems sound like. I also see him going to another level in the next year or so with everything he has learned so far. He makes 4 and 8 channel amps so I think it will just be a matter of time until he is incorporating muli-DSP crossovers and driving some big enclosures in the future. The amps he makes come from China all as one piece, it seems easy as pie to put in a case and add the power supply. These D amps also do not get hot  so all the heat issues of the past are really just a thing of the past. He uses what almost looks like Cat5 ethernet cable to power these open baffle multi-speaker designs. He is buying really good drivers too. Amazing work!

After looking at his web page it may give some speaker DIY ers at Head-Fi some help as well as great places to get the ICE amps and DSPs crossovers as well as bare speakers for a project.

Here is an 8 channel with two PSUs in place. Most of this stuff can be purchased off Ebay. After reading his web  site information I found all the parts from China on Ebay. He also posts what the total cost off this gear on his web site. As you can note not really a lot of building here but just putting together. I wonder if it will sound better than a high current amp? With eight channels you could do a lot to drive speakers one at a time post digital crossovers and "tune" the rig in real time!

Returned it all. Got $515 back. (50 dollar profit!) and bought some M-Audio BX5a's with some of a  leftover Amazon GIft Card + some cash.... Couldn't justify spending more with textbooks around the corner.

I VOW TO RETURN TO ACTUAL HIFI SETUPS SOON!

I also picked up some Components for my car and I'm browsing for an amp.

My advice would be to not overspend here. I used a lot of different amps in my car, from low-end to high-end, and never noticed a difference other than power and noise floor. Whether or not you believe Richard Clark, and "a watt is a watt" or not, you will not pick up on amp "sound signatures" in a car, especially at speed - it is the worst environment for an audio system possible. There are a LOT of good options out there for low cost, new or used.

Which components?

Image Dynamics. I know the amp isn't super important... I never listen loud anyway, I figure the extra power would let me get the detail at a lower volume. I don't have a sub or anything either. No want/need.
