HELP! Mounting Tubes on chassis ok?

Thread Starter

I am about to start a build of a tube phonostage and I was wondering if it is ok to mount the tubes on top of a chassis versus directly on the PCB. I ask this because, c'mon folks, half the reason you buy tubes is to show them off. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Depends how long your leads are, but it's likely OK.

You can also consider mounting the tube sockets on the PCB but mounting the PCB directly under the top of the chassis with the tubes sticking up through the case.

I think its common to either bolt the tube socket to the chassis and use wires down to your circuit board, or to mound the circuit board to the top of the chassis - usually requiring the tube sockets to be on the underside of the board, so as to project the tube up through a hole in the chassis, and yet have the other circuit board components hanging down into the chassis cavity.

Wires from the PCB to a remote mounted socket will increase parasitic capacitances and may screw things up. Id avoid it.

Devices with enclosed tubes are not only safer, they take up less room. Both are very important in something that normally gets tucked away in a corner of the system.

What phono stage is it anyways?
