Sony S vs. E series Walkman

Thread Starter

Hello everyone

I'm interested in buying a Sony Walkman unit and my main criteria are storage and quality

Which series of Sony walkmans deliver better sound quality?

Thank you

I had an S and an E at the same time last year and they sounded identical to me....the S just had more features and battery life. It's worth noting that since that time, both S and E models have had new versions come out....so I can't speak to them.

32GB or 64GB models I'm still waiting for myself,...

I have been slow in getting a review done of the newer E series model.  I am definitely going to do one since there seems to be very little around the site about it.  I can tell you for sure...the 2010 version (newest) of the E series is FAR AND AWAY better than any previous versions of the E series.

I have the S639 and also the S544 which has the S Master amp and under normal listening environments with any headphone I can tell very little difference between the E series and either S series walkman.  The S series seemed to have a little wider sound stage but other than that it's difficult to tell any differences.  I use the same EQ settings on all models and the new E series really holds it's own...and is better than my s639 in a lot of ways.  I'll have to point all those out when I finally write up a detailed review.

^^I think that's the one we keep waiting on here in the US and it just doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.  frown.gif

Until either series plays FLAC or some lossless.. Sony is dead to me (not really, just being dramatic)

It's a pity the S, and to a lesser extent, the A aren't for sale in the US.

I had the A, and while it sounded great it had a number of flaws - mainly the tiny buttons and limited features.

The S, though, with playlists, podcast support, pitch etc. is a very good player.. I'd rate it as high as the J3 if it had expandable memory.

Is it possible to go into the service menu on the 32gb S Series Walkman and remove the EU volume cap? I'd import one if I could locate it then,...

DAMN!!! Japanese language menu ONLY!!! I'll PASS!!!

And since it's NW and not NWZ you'd need to use Sonic Stage software - no thank you.

As in WAV goodbye to megabytes?

I know...  FLAC is a hog too (50%ish), but it still helps on 32gb.

I had a Sony BoomBox MP3 player that did ATRAC a Sony proprietary lossless thing.. but Sony ditched that.
