Subject sums this one up nicely. What are the best 2.1 computer speakers?

For COMPUTER SPEAKERS, the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 are pretty good, granted, you have to resist turning the sub up too high, and the satellites have a somewhat bright treble and not the clearest midrange on earth, but they sound much better than other computer speakers I've heard. Not saying they're nescessarily the best, but they're not too bad, either.

I have the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, and I don't find them good for music at all. The tonal balance is more unnatural than a few other computer speakers I've heard and the frequency extremes in both directions are boosted but not extended. I'm hoping to find a replacement for them, so I'd also be interested in hearing what people have to say about 2.1 systems.

Why not use a pair of studio monitor as your computer speaker?

Now you're talking!

BTW Regarding my Klipsch post, I bought them long before I became a "audiophile," but that said, I don't find their flaws as annoying as some do.

I'm a fan of the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 as well. I recommend them without reservation.

Wow, those ET's look nice, don't they? But they seem to suffer the great problem of planars, especially magnetic planars - lack of dispersion. And, with such a small planar but wide frequency driver, they suffer from a lack of both horizontal and vertical dispersion. But hey, if you are sitting close and still at a computer then I guess that doesn't matter. But that directionality may give you fits as you move the chair around just to get into it; I think you'll find yourself constantly readjusting the satellites every time you sit down to compensate for your exact seating position.

But, being ET's, the sound may be worth it. They are really pretty, being ET I'm sure nicely made, and considering all not excessively expensive.

Best or best value? There's endless roads you could take. I don't think there's anything pidgeonholing a certain type of speaker as "computer speakers." Take snake's celestions with cambridge sub. That's a killer system right there.

altec lansing just came out w/ pair of speaker called the mx5201. they are highly rated speakers and are the best looking that i've seen so far for computers. they have dual 3 inch midrange drivers with tweeters. i happened to come across them at circuity and they are the best 2.1's i've heard so far.

but they're at around $200, so they're a little pricey for 2.1's

for computer speakers, you check out 3dss-forums.com

How about at a budget of no more than $120? That should be about right.

Only problem with the LFT-11's is the 200hz crossover which spells no bass imaging and a lower midrange that's localizeable from the sub. I used to be interested in these too until I heard the Monsoon's problems for myself (of which are effectively cheapened and mass-produced LFT-11's, under license from Eminent Tech).

I recommend either the Promedia 2.1s or for even cheaper try something like the Altec Lansing ATP3.

Chip in another vote for the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system. I have the 4.1's and they're fine for music. Where the Promedias really come out is GAMING. Seriously...you have never gamed until you've heard these speakers. You can't imagine the difference between playing SC or Jedi Academy through my SR-80's and playing it through my PM4.1's. I don't know why, but it really sounds good. They've got a nice punch to them. They're also exceptional for watching DVD's.

My friend got the refurb PM2.1's and they exhibit (naturally) the same characteristics of my 4.1's, except my 4.1's have better sub and a BASH amp, so the bass is a bit faster and deeper.

I think the refurb 2.1's would be perfect for you. My friend got his and thought he had gotten a new pair. The site says that the speakers (refurbs) may have cosmetic imperfections, but trust me, these things were BRAND NEW, and were 80 bucks less than the new ones.
