>$1000 windfall - spend it all on audio ?

I know - we all have real world bills, and few of us have Paris Hilton's trust account to fall back on. For all that, I dont get a tax refund too often, and I'm debating whether I should buy that DT880/Talisman combo I've lusted after for several years.

Your task is to talk me out of it  ;)

I can't speak of the Talisman but the DT880 are wonderful, I'd say with the right amp they're a good 95% of the expensive flagships out there and even then it comes down to personal preference. Depending on taste you might prefer a tube amp as they can be sibilant and somewhat hollow sounding with some recordings, a transparent solid state amp wouldn't do anything for them.

Buy them! very_evil_smiley.gif

A tube amp, you say ? Uncle Erik seems to like this one - a lot ;)

Do you have emergency funds set aside?  Have you maxed out your 401k/IRA?  If so, go ahead!

401K ? I live in Australia - no such thing here. As for 'emergency funds', I guess it comes down to what you consider more important - food and shelter or great sound ...........  very_evil_smiley.gif

My plan is to have no plan - look at how long that fantasy lasted for the Greeks !

Buy the audio equipment. Life has a surfeit of misery in store for each of us no matter what we do to avoid it.

Too true - even Hef seems to have trouble finding true love, and that's a man who never has to take off his pyjamas !

I'd rather take a vacation.

I had the same problem. $2000 in and didn't need it.

Guess what I did?

I spent $1000 of it on a flight to Japan.

Slept like a hobo for 3 months and explored the country spending off the $1000 as I could

then I had to return home and got my college to pay for my flight back because I'm a "Asset" to them. Suck ups.

But if I was you, buy something you'd like, not expensive, like a cheap, but good $300 tube amp and save the rest. You might turn to a new addiction and need the extra cash. I know i have a good amount of money in my account but eating ramen as we speak because I'm cheap. I'd rather have money for a lot of things then into two items I like.

3 months in Japan on a thousand bucks ? Friend, I doubt I could manage that in Cambo or Laos (and I've been to both countries). I guess the upside is that I can get to Asia for less money, but they wont let you in most countries without a return plane ticket - again, I have no idea how you accomplished that in a country like Japan.

All depends on "The List". If audio was the next item, then you should go for it.

Save your money. don't go down the audiophile road.

Yes, he is going to have to explain how he did that, 3 MONTHS!?! I'd KILL to be in Japan that long! Even with all the Nuclear bric-a-brac floating about.

You HAVE to tell this story man. I find that absolutely amazing!!

The Zana Deux does pair nicely with the DT880... I loved them together.

But it depends on your financial situation. You should have about six months of living expenses put aside. If you're adequately covered, then go for it. The nice thing about the Zana is that it has a way of killing upgraditis. It's an amp you can spend the next 20 or 30 years with.

Thanks for the feedback, Uncle Erik. Grand scheme of things, a $2200 amp and a $300 pair of headphones pale next to the money many around me throw at cars and trips overseas - I guess it all comes down to priorities.
