If you research music history, it's not hard to find out about all the old school stuff. For example, a single mainstream thread could take you all the way back to very obscure old school roots. Let's say we take a somewhat well-known artsy group like Yellow Magic Orchestra, or even just its most famous member, The Academy Award winning composer Sakamoto Ryuichi. If we simply read up on the musical history of Sakamoto or YMO, you'll immediately come across what the other members of YMO have done in their solo careers, the collaborations they've done with other musicians and bands, the musical projects they were in before they even met and became YMO, as well as information about their contemporaries. So basically, from any starting point, it's like six degrees of separation and you can trace all the way back to just about any time period and any genre.
