External SoundCard or Amplifier? And what brand?

I got Logitech Z-5500.. and source laptop. But, I'm looking for 5.1 soundcard external or amplifier to support their features (THX, Dolby Digital Pro Logic II, DTS 96/24).

And I see digital input for that speaker. So which the best digital cable? Coaxial or Optical?

And what should I buy? External soundcard or amplifier?

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD , I don't think theres many that can pass though 5.1 channel sound, or check the second hand market and look for the m-audio audiophile usb it can pass though 5.1 sound and output it though coax and you can get a used 1 for cheap.

I'm in the exact same situation: z-5500 system connected to MSI laptop.  I'm outputting stereo from the laptop to the z-5500 and using the Pro Logic II effect to simulate surround sound.

From what I've researched so far, everything has lead back to the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi (USB version) because of it's Dolby Digital Live and optical out.

Purchase from here...

And use promotional code JULY2011 to get 30% off

1-day shipping from Amazon is only $3.99

Grand total: $52.98

That a good deal!
