I've been pretty lucky getting a Sony and 2 Cowons from second-hand places that were as new, but I'd be wary about buying an older device.

Yeah I bought a pair of fake IE8s from a secondhand store but at least they refunded my money unlike the other secondhand shop where I have been conned big time with the dodgy iPod 5G and they refuse to refund me.

Do you have one of these ^^ cables?

If so does the iPod charge and sync to iTunes?

That'll help us understand if the L/O is working as I don't think a 5th is compatible with your touch TV-out cable.

The cable seen on the link you posted is the cable I use to sync my iPod 5G to iTunes on my Mac and I am able to sync to iTunes and charge with no problems. Everything works on my iPod 5G except for the no sound issue I'm experiencing through headphones.

I opened up my iPod 5G thanks to the photos you posted and the headphone cable seems to be firmly connected to the logic board and the headphones socket. Incidentally, I tried my iPod Touch TV-out cable on the LOD of my iPod Nano 2G and the sound works on that.

Hi Art, then I think we are on pretty safe ground saying that you have a faulty headphone socket/jack.

You can buy 5th gen hold switch/headphone jack replacement parts from well known auction sites for £5.

Alternatively buy a beat up 5th gen iPod and salvage the part you need. Plus side of this is you'll have other spare parts, downside is THAT headphone jack might be broken. Though that is unlikely as they are pretty robust.

All the above would involve you doing the work obviously.

Thanks for the help. I will check eBay for faulty iPod 5G and hold/headphone jack. So does that mean if I can sync and charge my iPod 5G then the Line out should be working?

Usually yes it does. Commonly when the L/O dock breaks it is the soldering to the board that fails so you lose the ability to charge, data transfer and listen through the dock. But it could happen that the pins that transfer data and charge are working and the pins that transfer sound are damaged I guess.

That is why testing the dock with a LOD and amp was suggested (which I guess you have Done in a way with the touch L/O cable)

If both the LO and the headphone jack are failing that may suggest some kind of PCB board issue.

This is where you have the advantage of buying a 5th gen with a failed HD because you have all the parts required to repair your iPod regardless of the issue.

You're gonna have to decide either to invest more money on your purchase or give up the ghost and sell yours for scrap.

It CAN be fixed, but be warned that we have identified the headphone jack as the POTENTIAL issue. If that doesn't work it'll need a new board.

If the disk spins up and plays tracks (as indicated by the screen) and the iPod syncs, charges and loads songs then you don't have a fault hard drive.

Just a quick thought, have you run the restore option via iTunes? This will delete all music on the iPod. But will reset it to factory settings and update all firmware.

Might be worth trying.

If you want to send it to me (£2.60 first class recorded) I'll gladly take a look. I have a few spare 5th gens laying around. I might be able to get it working for you.

Yes I ran a restore via iTunes originally to see if that would fix the problem but it didn't fix it.

OK, so it's pretty much decision time. Bin it off and wear the loss or pursue a fix and hopefully end with a working iPod.

I went on my local Gumtree to see if there was any iPod 5G and one guy is selling one for spares and repairs for £30. He says that the only problem with it is that when he switches the iPod on it loads the black Apple logo then the screen goes to white. Is that a display issue or a logic board issue?
