IPod 5G plays but no sound

After reading the hype on here about the iPod 5G sounding awesome on Rockbox because the Hardware EQ is enabled I bought an iPod Video 5G secondhand recently but when I got home to play some music on it there is no sound. When I turn the volume up all I hear is background hiss. The music is playing because the music track counter is moving.

Could I be right in thinking that it could be an issue with the hard disk?

I really don't think it is anything to do with file format not being playable because the same files I am playing (but have no sound) play with sound on my Mac, iPod Touch and my other DAPs. There seems to be no sound on all of the music files on the 5G.

I don't hear any noise from the hard disc when music is playing and when I first play a track I can hear the hard disc operating for a split second then it goes quiet.

Same thing happened to my iPod 5G that was several years old. I found no way to fix the problem and just sold it for spare parts.

could be the headphone jack, they are relatively cheap, could usually be found on ebay, and are very easy to install. If you have a LOD you could see if the sound works coming out of the proprietary dock. If it did work out the the LOD then the headphone jack is problem.

I took it back to the shop but the guy refused to give me a refund as he told me it was fully tested and working and started losing the cool with me because I demanded I wanted a refund. Instead he told me he would have to take it off me to repair it. He then told me he would phone me in a couple of days once it is repaired. I am actually finding this suspicious.

Sounds suspicious, but I guess you'll know in a few days if you get a call or not.

You should have popped the back off. Could have just been the ribbon connecting the headphone jack to the board.

Tue suggestion above about testing the LOD slot would have solved that issue.

I never got a call back from the secondhand shop so I visited them and it was a bit of a carry on. My iPod was still sitting on the shop owners desk untouched. I asked for a full refund but he refused to give me a refund telling me that there is no money back guarantee on secondhand goods. I then told him that I know my rights and by law secondhand goods have got to come with a money back guarantee if it is not in satisfactory condition. The guy then started shouting and arguing so I asked for my iPod back and told them that I will be in touch with trading standards and walked out.

Yeah, I got the iPod back unfixed :( I was scared to leave it with him any longer incase he sold it for spairs and repairs. If it wasn't for rockbox (which I didn't have a chance to install) and the hardware eq function on rockbox I wouldn't of bothered buying this piece of junk.

I can probably help you a little.

I'm going to assume you are in the US? If you are UK, I'd be happy if you wanted to send it to me and I'd take a look.

Otherwise I can talk your through opening the iPod and checking the ribbon, and headphone jack.(maybe post some pics on here for you)

Let me know what you think.

I took some pictures of what you need to do and look at.

First remove the backplate of the iPod, identify a small, thin tool to use. Slide the thin tool insie the plastic/metal seal.

Then, using a little force against your tool, lever the two parts of the iPod apart...

Then, when the two parts are nicely seperated (don't pull them right apart at this point)... flip the iPod over.

Lift up one edge of the iPod back cover...notice that the iPod has two ribbons connected on the PCB side of the iPod. (one is battery, one is headphone out).

**I'm going to post in another post,.... I have a feeling loading this many pictures at once is not a good idea!

Now, you are looking for the ribbon at the base of the iPod (by the line out dock)...

DSC_8855.JPG

Disconnect this ribbon (it is the battery ribbon, supplying power to the iPod).

DSC_8856.JPG

You can now turn the whole of the chrome case over...

If you move the hard drive over slightly, being careful not to disconnect it's ribbion at the base... you'll see where the headphone jack ribbion attaches behind the hard drive.

Make sure its properly connected. They can come loose.

If the ribbon is connected, then it's probably the headphone jack itself thas is broken...

If you remove the battery (glued in place, use care removing, but basically prize it away from the backplate) you'll see that the headphone jack is held in place with tiny screws...both left and right side need removing to replace the unit as the ribbon for the hold swich is connected to the headphone jack ribbon.

Alternatively buy a spare iPod (faulty) and remove the whole backplate lock stock and barrel and put onto your ipod, that way you wouldn't need to do the fiddly part of removing the headphone jack, but would only need to remove the battey ribbon and headphone jack ribbon from the PCB part of the iPod.

**I'm not comfortable that the above paragraph makes sense, but it'slate, so I'm going to leave it as is. I can't believe I'm the first person to post a 'how to dismember and iPod' post.

Hope this helps, PM me if you think I can help any more.

Thanks for the suggestions and photos.

I connected my iPod Touch Tv-Out cable to the line out socket of my iPod 5G and connected the audio cables of the TV-Out cable to my mixing desk. There still doesn't seem to be any sound when I'm playing music. I tried the same thing with my iPod Touch and the sound works with that. So it's made me believe that the problem isn't with the headphone socket or the headphone cable.

I don't know how second hand shop dealers can sleep at night mad.gif

That's the danger of buying from second-hand shops sometimes.. didn't you get a fake pair of ie8s from a shop?

I've been pretty lucky getting a Sony and 2 Cowons from second-hand places that were as new, but I'd be wary about buying an older device.
