D2/D2+ and SDXC cards

Thanks to http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showpost.php?p=542017&postcount=47 and http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/528916/the-fiio-x3-thread-upcoming-fiio-dap/1380#post_7567754 pointing it out, it turns out that SDXC 3.0 cards are pin compatible with SDHC cards, and we can re-partition them (fix up mbr) /reformat to fat32 to then use them on D2/D2+. That said, SDXC 4 has an extra pin and is not physically compatible, so take care.

Wo-hoo!

Probably not the right thread, but it sure looks like something worth sharing, since google searches for cowon d2|d2+ SDXC don't return much useful info. So if you have a D2/D2+ and want the info to pop up in google help 'signature bunny take over the world' and post a comment expressing your utmost delight.

That means a 64+16GB D2+ biggrin.gif ...Or who knows, maybe we can find a SDXC 3.0 in 128GB, then it's 128+16GB (well, not quite after the dodgy 10^3 vs 2^10, but yea)

Considering I had my D2 for 3 years or so now, and it's still as new/despite everything it's been through/batteries costing about $20.... It's really an epic unit (not to mention still supporting folder navigation).

Don't forget the file limits on the D2/D2+,...kinda makes getting a 64gb SDXC card a bad idea,...the b'tards!!!

you're sort of right http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54938

I guess if you use if for flac only, then it's mostly not a problem (at least for classical, since the average track size is about 20 mb and that's around 80gb of files smily_headphones1.gif )

That said if there are 3.0 128gb cards, then for internal firmware file # limits will certainly be an issue even for classical frown.gif

Switching to rockbox is always an option, I guess. But last time I tried it (about a year ago) it was pretty raw.

Wouldn't Rockbox get around that problem?

it does. Only cowon's org firmware has the file limit. D2 Rockbox might not be for everyone though ...

Plus some builds/features are not very stable and some features don't yet work

Rockbox would solve the file limit issue - but I personally find it redundant, since the Cowon's have an excellent EQ, BBE+, etc. It solves one (major IMO) issue, only to take away the main reason most buy a Cowon in the first place.

Agreed....I wouldn't bother with an unfinished Rockbox port on a D2 either.

k...just a word of caution. The player's firmware reads past the 28.6gb mark (when you play things), however when the player is used as a mass-storage card reader device (plugged into the PC to copy things to), you can't write or read past that mark. Moreover, Windows XP didn't let me format the card as 59gb, but instead formatted it as 29gb... After partitioning it on Win7 64b it's all good/could convert it to a 59gb total space FAT32 card on windows following the instructions above... That said, either you need windows 7 or ext card reader to actually put things on the player biggrin.gif so take care

mkay, did a test with a card reader - fine on any OS with the card.
Tried D2 mounting the card in win7 64 and it still only sees about 28gb and not past that.

But again, it reads the files fine when you use it as a music player separately, so not a big deal biggrin.gif ...

is this d2 specific or does this mean there are possibilities with it working with any other cowans?

Man, the promise of a 96gb mp3 player,...***sigh***  smile.gif

I think its more of a 'ver 3 sdxc are pretty well compatible with devices that read 32GB sdhc cards' so not really d2 specific

128GB SDXC Card works just fine in my D2+ with Rockbox. I formatted a Lexar 133x 128GB SDXC card to Fat32 on my Mac computer. Put it in my PC, copied over 70GB of music and the Rockbox files and it works just great!

I'm pretty sure if you loaded nothing but flac files. Maybe some long single track techno albums taking up 500MB each for 1 file. You could probably fille 128GB + 16GB then. What is the file size limit? Or you could even load them in as .wavs if the uncompressed .wav will use less battery since the processor runs heavier decoding flac then just reading pure uncompressed. Then you could make use of all the space. Also get a lot of 24/96 flacs.
