Stereo Amp recommendation 300-500 - Page 2

I would recommend an open box Emotiva UPA-2 for under $300- hard to beat IMO.

Marantz PM 5004 integrated amp.

I would someday like to try out a NAD integrated amp.

Aluminum dome tweeters are bright and require careful filtering (notch filter in the xover) and careful construction to eliminate the many drawbacks they pose....some essential positive attributes for a tweeter an aluminum dome has however, is incredible stiffness and very light weight (mass). That being said I cannot think of a single reference speaker that would use one (because of the aural drawbacks). I've been through all kinds of tweeters over the years, poly, titanium, aluminum, silk, fabric, paper, ribbon, planar , synthetic fibre etc ...they all have a sound signature of sorts that is unique to the material used which can be softened (with xover adjustments) but not entirely overcome.

Inverted domes made of diamond or beryllium seem to be top of the food chain these days (despite advances in design IE Vifa ring radiator type).

The NAD C316BEE got a great review in Stereophile this month and would be a good bet. I'd also keep an eye open on Audiogon for a used Rotel RA-1520; a very impressive integrated.

I've been happy with my Cambridge azur 640a v2 for years. Got it cheap used.

This is a good integrated amp- agreed. I had it for a couple of years. But I feel the UPA-2 as a stand-alone amp is better sounding for close to the same money.

Oh, and I love Rush too- major Rush-head in the 80's (and today if I must admit it).

Agreed...the NAD stuff is decent but the entry level models from NAD leave a lot to be desired compared to such examples as you cite here Tim. Another Rush head present here (early stuff from 74-79) as well. beerchug.gif
