Would you guys recommend the ld mkiii or nfb12?

Hi everyone,

I bought a pair of dt880s 600 Ohms a few weeks back and have been enjoying them greatly. I'm looking into investing into and amp and a DAC and leave the hifi world until something breaks :P

I've read that tube amps are better for the 880s, I'm just concerned with the longevity of it opposed to a SS amp. Should I settle for the combo or buy the little dot and maybe pick up a HRT streamer in the future?

Thanks everyone!

Glad you are enjoying the dt880s. Another amp you might want to look into is the Schiit Valhalla. Works great with the 600 ohm Beyers.

A downside is you cannot tube roll. However, that might be a plus to you because the stock tubes sound great with the amp and you don't have the added expense of buying different tubes to experiment with.

Well you can find the Valhalla usually in the trade forum (or other places) slightly used for around $200.00

The MK3 is pretty darn good at driving my 600 Ohm T1s. $100 dollar difference worth it? No.

Actually both amps do a great job and you can't go wrong with either one in that price point.

aight, you guys got me. I was thinking about the valhalla since you suggested it, but if the price of it isn't a huge difference from the ld mkiii I think im going to order it off ebay soon.

I do like the fact that the valhalla is us made and comes with a 5 year warranty, but I could use the price difference to finish my rig with a DAC.. :(

And I sold my stratocaster to fund this amp too lol

What do you guys think about the HRT streamer as a DAC? I'm going to be switching the amp between my computer for music and my tv/ps3 for blu ray movies (my dt880 is basically going to be my audio system, I was going to buy a soundbar for my tv but won't anymore)

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have personally experienced the NFB12 with the DT880/600Ohm and can say it sounds great. the DAC seems nice too, tried it with speakers too, very much better than a built in soundcard from a macbook pro. very worth the low pricetag I would say. but then again, it isn't tubes. the little dot is however. quite different sounding. there are probably some better options to the HRT streamer to be honest. not that it's bad but for the price I believe you can get something better. maybe look for a used AMB Gamma 2? I think it can be had for a bit over $200

Have you considered the Dynalo? Classic circuit and has been one of the best out there for years. It'll sound great with a DT880. I built a Dynalo some years back and really enjoyed it with the DT880 (sold to fund the HD-800, but a great headphone.)

DT880/990 600 ohm works well with OTL type tube amps, such as LD MKIII, MKIV, etc.

I have the LD MKII which is even a bit cheaper. I did considered the Valhalla  which is a good amp and gives another choice besides Woo Audio which are both USA made.  There was a few things that swung me in favor or LD. First was the adjustable gain switches since I am using balanced outputs to unbalanced conversion the inputs to the amp would be on the hot side and the fixed gain of the Valhalla   would be too high for my needs. Second more choices in tube rolling gives me more options in tailoring the sound. Third, the biggest advantage was that both LD MKll and MKlll have pre-amp outputs that can also in addition to headphones can also drive "active" speakers using all of the four tubes. You have to decide if the technical differences are important to your needs or not.
