Hi,
I would like to buy some speakers for about 200$ for my dorm room (3*4m big).

- they will be placed on the sides of my LCD on desk, therefore it shouldn't be something big

- the source will be either my laptop(HP ProBook 6450b), or smartphone(SE Xperia X10)

- don't have amp

- not sure which one of 2.0 and 2.1 suits my needs more

- I listen to melodic hardcore, punk-rock, symphonic metal and some pop-punk and ska. I prefer clarity to bass. I would like it play better than my Fischer Audio Eterna IEMs (quality on par with HEAD-DIRECT RE0). If the speakers are of lower quality, I will rather use my IEMs and therefore speakers will be waste of money

I have read some comparisons and reviews and found these interesting pieces:

Behringer MS 40
M-Audio AV40
AudioEngine A2
Harman Kardon SoundSticks III
Acoustic Energy AEGO M

Which one of these suits my requirements the most and why?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I voted AV40 mainly because they sound good at a good price.

Go for either the A2's or the AV40's.

If you can find someone with them for a listen it would be better.

Just make sure you isolate them once you get them. My A2's raped everything with the bass resonating everywhere

Thanks for the replies. Tomorrow I am going to try out M-Audio AV40 and Behringer MS40. The other 3 aren't sold in here... therefore no chance to try them out. Those AV40s look promising. If I like the sound tomorrow, I will probably buy them. However, I have read that despite the great sound quality, there are many problems with them e.g. buzzing, poping and crackling when turning on/off, overheating, short lifespan... I'm not sure if I want to take a risk....

av40 feel real cheap compared to the A2. Behringer makes good products, i was gonna go for their bigger version of the ms40 (i forget what they were called) but decided to go passive speakers.... you may wanna consider KRK, I think the rokit 5 are around $200.

Rokit would best them all but I think they are pricier than 200$.

I went to shop and listened to some speakers. I couldn't decide between M-Audio Bx5a and Alesis M1 Active 520. Bx5a sounded more precise, but listening to Alesis was more fun, especially when it comes to bass. In the end I went for Alesis. A bit more expensive than I wanted, but I think they are worth the money. I am quite satisfied.

+1 went with the R1900TII for my niece and thought they sounded better than AV40 and seems very under rated/little known gems  tongue_smile.gif If amp + passive is acceptable how about T-amp and some Polks/Infinity/etc biggrin.gif

edit: oh got your Alesis - gratz and enjoy your tunes on those new toys wee~
