If you want to save some money you should get the Xonar DX which is a really good sound card..

The DS3D GX 2.0  engine emulates just fine Creative's EAX 5.0.

The sound effects are amazing especially if you have a good set of speakers...

As for using your headphones the DX card doesn't support dolby headphones, you will have to get the D2X for that..

Personally i watched movies with dolby headphones feature with my m50's and i didn't like the effect that added to the sound..

Too much reverb applied on the sound..

I've heard that the essence stx is better for headphones than the D2X, is that true?

Easy there tigerbiggrin.gif GX 2.0 only supports EAX 2, the version that Creative released for other manufacturers, EAX3-5 is exclusive to Creative.

And I totally agree with the virtualization techs from both Creative and Asus cards, definitely makes sound feel more artificial.

O.k it supports EAX 2 and no EAX3-5 but you won't notice much difference if you have a sound card that only supports EAX 2..

That is my point, games are well playable even with EAX 2....

Yes it is because Essence has a High Fidelity Headphone Amplifier from Texas Instruments.

It also has a switchable op amp which you can customise to your liking!

Both Essence ST/STX and D2X have swappable opamps, but the Essence ST/STX has a headphone amp that's bright and make sound harsher than D2X.

Ok, so should i get the Essence card if i'm only going to use headphones?

Will they work good with the D7000 or do i need an amp?
