Connecting my laptop to an amp: HDMI to 1/4"

Right now, I have an ASUS laptop with an HDMI output, and I'm looking to connect it to my E7/E9 through the HDMI. I'm using the USB right now, but I keep hearing that the sound can be much better than it is, and I'd like to see if it's possible for me to get around this little block.

Has anyone had this problem, and if so, is there a easy-ish way to get around it? I'd love to get just one cable and solve this, but I called up to a local store, and they said a cable like that doesn't exist.

nope you've been misinformed. unless you plan to buy a dac with coaxial or optical input and a device that can extract the digital signal from hdmi output.

There is no way to achieve this with the e7.

Oh, well that solves it. Thanks for the info.

If you want to experiment with another audio chain and if you have access to an AVR, try using the HDMI with an the AVR. The headphone out on the AVR is probably at least decent, and that might serve as a useful comparison to the USB to E7/E9 chain.
