At what price should I expect headphone equivalency?

Thread Starter

Been using headphones for music listening for about 15 years, though just recently (1-2 years ago) got myself a decent headphone + amp.

I have been considering adding 2.1 speakers to my "computer room".

At what price level should I expect the same clarity and resolution that I get from a good $150 headphone?

My current amp has Headphone out and stereo out, so I would need self-powered speakers.

I tried a pair of generic samsung speakers and the speakers from a home theater set up (and their correspondent amps) and they don't get even close to what I can listen on my headphone....

Why not look into 2.0 stereo active 'studio' monitors that are designed to fit on a desktop? Some people complain of a lack of bass but that's mostly in comparison to 2.1 setups that include a sub-woofer and it depends on the room, mounts, cables, pre-amp etc. A lot of nice DACs and head-amps will have RCA pre-outs for monitors that will help keep your headphone and monitor system nicely integrated.

If it's equivalency you're looking it also really depends on which roughly $150 headphone we're talking about but I'd suggest looking more in the direction of monitors if it's clarity and resolution you're after.
