I heard a couple of pieces from Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances played on CBC Radio 2 and was motivated to think, I want to hear this in all its hi-fi glory. I've sort of familiarized myself with some of the main editions but would never shell out the money without also asking for head-fi's advice. Does anyone have an suggestions in regards to the top performances of these pieces on either CD or SACD?

I'm kinda new to classical music, but I do own this set...
...which I really like. It also sounds very good out of my LCD-2, though I haven't heard other performances to be able to compare.
Good luck!

This is THE version to have:

The recording technique used is a minimalist recording technique and the sound is just superb! The performance is equally impressive.

This is my favorite, Baltimore under the baton of one of my favorite conductors, David Zinman. Amazing performance and very well recorded.

I also have Ashkenazy leading the Concertgebouw on this 3 disc set, but both the playing and recording are quite a bit less impressive. A surprise knowing the Concertgebouw talent pool.

I was away camping last week and was happy to check this thread again and see some suggestions. Amazon.ca has a couple of these and my STAX rig longs for a some good symphonic tracks. Thank you so much for the suggestions.
