Question about speaker setup.

Thread Starter

We had someone come in to put some speakers in around a raised outdoor patio.

The installed these speakers.

I was concerned because the wire they used is AWG 22 and the run is about 30-40ft and im guessing it would take near 50-60ft of cable minimum to get to the farthest speaker. It also doesn't look like the wire is insulted it just has the regular thing plastic coating you see on most wire.

They were added to a system which has a bunch of other speakers on it and at 20% volume these are usually plenty load. I have to put these new speakers at like 60% plus volume to hear them even decently.

My questions is should these be wired thicker wire and should if have some sort of insulation stuff on it? I think the speakers take 2 power and 2 cables for sound each. I guess also the speakers each produce stereo sound because as it stands you cannot hear any 2 at the same time out of the three speakers!

Also anyone know anything about episode rock speakers. We were charged $300 usd per speaker and $50 usd for the 22 gauge cable.

Thanks!

these outdoor speakers are 86db sensitivity which is on the low side so it will require more power than your average speaker to get it to the same level hence they recommend 100w RMS, which is quite a high number. cheaper surround receivers only produce around 30-60w RMS depending on the number of speakers it's powering. my guess is that your other speakers have a much higher sensitivity, hence the louder sound at a lower volume.

thicker wire may help a bit since it's a long run.

prob best to post what you're powering with and how many speakers you're powering

would have recommended 16guage at that distance too. outdoor speaker wire usually says outdoor or CL rated on it. 30-50 dollars sounds about right for 16 guage for the cheap stuff (best buy, radio shack). 50 dollars for 22 guage is def on the high side.

It depends on the impendance of the speakers aswell what gauge wire is required, but 22awg does sound to small for that kind of length, id recommend 16+awg it doesn't matter if it's 2 big but it does matter if it's too small, also copper wire outside will oxide very quickly so id recommend tinned copper wire or copper wire with the ends terminated with bannana plugs or spades.
