DAC setup

Hiya all.  Pretty new here.  Second posting, but my first posting got no responses bigsmile_face.gif.  Fair enough, I'm a noob, will admit it.

So, I have no AV Receiver.  Before you shoot me, I bought one of those Bose 2.1 systems.  I know, I know....pretty lame by most standards, but hey, I live in a small apartment, and it does the job.

It only has one TosLink input, and that's pretty much it.  So I feed the TosLink output from my TV to the Bose.  Fair enough, simple.

I have a set of Sennheiser RS180's, wireless.  Right now, they are just hooked into the TV's 3.5mm jack.  I'm guessing I'm not getting the most out of them.  I wrote an email to Sennheiser USA, and a product guy came back to me saying that their sound will scale up with a DAC.

Soooooo, being a noob, and having done some research on DACs, I've looked at things like the Maverick D1 (mainly because I get a used one from a friend).  Seems pretty good for a new person starting.  What I'm wondering is how to connect the DAC into my setup, seeing that the TosLink from the TV goes to the Bose.

Could I get a TosLink splitter, and split the signal from the TV to both the Bose and the DAC?  That way I'd get optical in to both?  Then run the cans into the Maverick?

I appreciate any help.  Sorry for writing so much, I've tried to convey my setup as best I could.

I think the Maverick will be good for you

You could do this:

Toslink TV -> Mav D1 -> Preamp (tube) out RCA -> Bose RCA

And then you can use the D1 as a DAC and as a headphone amp as well

enjoy!

I had a Mav D1 for a while. It certainly has multiple outputs (for RCA and headphones), but I don't recall seeing an output selector.

Hmmm.  Interesting.  Never thought of that (hence why I came here!!)

So basically the DAC would feed both the headphones and the Bose system?  Cool.  Going RCA instead of Toslink to the Bose...would there be any sound quality loss?  I guess the fact that it's going through the DAC before the Bose is still going to boost it right?

Thanks for the info!!  Really appreciate it.

And why would he need one?

So, are you saying I can't run both the Bose and the cans at the same time with the outs on the DAC?  i.e. have audio running from both at the same time?  Hence why I was looking at a Toslink splitter...to feed both.

I can't remember if the RCA outputs stop working when you plug in a headphone, but why would you need your headphone and your Bose system at the same time playing the same music?

The DAC will send audio to your Bose from your TV. You only have one source.

By using the RCA in on the Bose, you are bypassing the Bose internal DAC
